For those wondering, I’m running the game inside the FTEQW source port as a Quake mod, even though it was also released standalone in late 1997.
lack of player progression really hurt that experience for me, from what ive heard marvel is mostly to blame for rushing the game to hit a release window, as was the style at the time
The retail release of this was actually a ‘total conversion’. You can see the words on the box art in the link.

Back when most games had bespoke engines, a total conversion is what we called a game using another games engine.
