Who only washes their dishes in water without soap?
I’m an Arab, and it never occurred to me that not everyone can smell this. I will say that the smell is most obvious in lamb, which is much more common in the Middle East than in most Western cultures. Perhaps the more frequent exposure is another reason why we are more sensitive to it.
Also, Arabs are the people. Arabic is the language.
After watching the video it sounds similar to the phenomena where the colors that people can discern depend on whether or not words for the colors exist in their language.
Caucasion person here, can totally smell this, feeling vindicated right now.
I notice that smell as soon as water comes into contact with dishes that had raw egg on them.
To me it’s like that nasty wet dog smell, and it even occurs on plates cleaned in the dishwasher sometimes.
“With the utmost respect, smell you later.” 😂
I don’t see why the professors would discount a genetic component to it. For example, when most people eat a cucumber it tastes like crunchy water but to some they taste salty which is down to genetics.
Try the experiment again with a group of non-Arabic people who have been trained on the phenomenon.
This smell has a name in some cultures in mexico, “choquia”. The smell of poorly washed dishes.
