What Remains of Edith Finch, a game I will never forget. A top-tier narrative.

Agreed. Fantastic and incredibly memorable game. The fish canning level is one of the best usages of gameplay-as-storytelling I’ve ever seen.
For those who have never played…
>!You’re given a playable flashback sequence of someone you’re told died at a fish processing facility. The sequence is played in a first person perspective as the character looks down at their work. With the right hand, you grab a fish, slide it over to the right so its head gets removed by a blade, then slide it further to the right. Rinse, repeat. Rinse, repeat. Repeat. Repeat. Repeat.!<
>!This monotonous loop of busywork leaves both the player and the character bored. But then he starts daydreaming, and that daydream appears overlaid on the work surface. Your left hand controls the movement of a hero embarking on a quest and enjoying a celebratory parade. *All the while*, the right hand movement of grabbing and sliding the fish doesn’t stop. Both you, and the character, are multitasking, and both are much more attached to the colorful and interesting adventure dream. Moving around a little figure in the daydream while still processing the fish is tricky at first, but it actually becomes second nature and eventually you just start focusing entirely on the daydream.!<
>!Then. Slice! The character’s right hand gets cut right off from careless usage of the blade. And that’s how he died.!<
I agree it makes great use of videogames as a medium.
If someone here didn’t play it yet, I suggest giving it a try even though it’s a walking simulator of sorts.
The game is a true classic and great piece of story telling
“Whatever’s out there, I want you to know that I’m ready for it. I’m going to appreciate all of it. Especially the food”
That game sucks, such a boring story and gameplay
The dialogue in this game really sticks with me too
Based on all the reviews, I expected more from it honestly. It was entertaining for a short time, but I didn’t find it particularly memorable. I know people mention the factory as their major moment, but I knew exactly what was going to happen right when I saw it. It was not shocking at all to me, but obviously that is subjective. I found the game fairly meh and have no desire to play it again.
I thought it was going to be a fun little adventure game and instead got traumatized by bathtubs and fish factories
Such a sad and beautiful game.
I find it a very relaxing game. Something to do when you want to play a good story, without the heavy stimulus that video games usually have.
It was firewatch for me. Tho I really liked edith finch too
That fishpacking level is still burned into my memory. Such a well designed game, I should really replay it again after these past few years
This and Martha is dead, man. Amazing.
That bathtub segment was gutwrenching
For everyone whole loved Edith Finch like I did, I also recommend Gone Home. Siomilar vein, and such a gripping ending…
one of my favorite game ever i loved it so, mutch

Classic
Probably one of my favourite games ever.
And that tonality helps a lot

I watched a streamer play and it wasn’t the same playing it, if you see this comment play the game yourself, don’t watch a play through before I promise it’s worth the money
I expected more puzzles, but it was honestly a great game. Loved the story.
It was good but it hit me wrong. I found myself getting so atrociously depressed that I wasn’t able to finish the game.
outstanding game!
What remains of Edith Finch is the only walking simulator I’ve ever actually enjoyed enough to play through a second time.
Dang I was trying to remember the name of this game and you did it for me thanks, im gonna re download it on my lunch and play it after work if I have energy.
So I just finished this game and I’m going to disagree with most people here, with the caveat that walking simulators may not be my things.
Part of why people mention the bathtub and cannery scenes are because they were so much better than the rest of the game. In the end it’s pretty irrational, grim, and unsatisfying. Some may say that’s the point, but it was far from immersive for me.
I hate walking sims but this one was really good
So I’ve only visited Seattle once and along with it islands in the Sound. They didn’t even have to say that it was set on one of those unusual, little islands in Puget Sound for me to know where this was supposed to be. All it took was me walking down the driveway to know where I was supposed to be.
Also, I’ve never seen a house look more realistically lived-in than when I first entered the house. Just the way that all the items are stacked on every horizontal surface like it had built up over the course of a few years due to being busy living life.
If you liked this, check out Gone Home
Firewatch was overall better but i did enjoy WRoEF. Especially the swing part
The bathtub….omg I cried!!!
that game..that game left me with so many memories and it’ll be one of those games I adore but will never play again, i can only take so much trauma.
I absolutely love how this game ties to the unfinished swan. If you haven’t played that game I highly recommend it even though it’s very short
Beautiful but utterly haunting. A masterpiece of the walking simulator genre.
Ok I keep hearing great things about this game. I’ll bump it up to my next game list after I finish what I’m playing next.
I also recomand Before your eyes if you liked this one
I became stuck – the game triggered my PTSD, could not go into the bathroom without my husband with me , so Although I found the visuals lovely and the story somewhat intriguing, this game has to be the worst game I have played in fifty years, and yes, I have been playing games that long.
