What Is The Most 80s Movie Ever? – A Video Essay

  • It is either Rocky III or Rocky IV.

Rocky III is actually more impressive because it lands in 1982, predates a lot of what MTV is going to end up doing/being by a couple years, and still manages to tell a coherent story (not a great story, but a coherent one)

however, Rocky IV is so over the top, so jingoistic, so stupid, so excessive in basically every way (Rocky is essentially not even Rocky in this movie, it’s just Sly Stallone directing Sly Stallone like a softcore porn compilation of Sly Stallone) that it’s hard not to see it and think that it’s the purest, dumbest, stupidest distillation of every excessive impulse the 80s ever had, and then poured into a single movie.

Which is primarily why it’s still beloved to this day. it’s not because it’s a good movie (it’s a fucking terrible one, which is what makes the fact Creed spun out of it all the more miraculous) but because it’s just this perfect pressurized diamond of cliche and stereotype about the era, sprayed down with tanning oil and posing.

And now I’m going to watch the (90 minute, damn) video and see whether Patrick comes up with a different answer, LOL.

  • Watching the Lost Boys where they go to a concert where the lead singer is wearing a big chain around his neck, no shirt and and playing a sax I thought it may be one of the most 80s scenes ever. Gremlins was pretty 80s too.
