Honestly it’s chasing unnecessary detail and quality in games that’s killing companies ability to put out decent games, fetishization of graphics has taken priority. No wonder new games code tries to kill itself, it’s got 470 different parameters for which position the sun should be in in relation to the player characters asshair.
I think they should work on physics simulations and chemistry engines now. Imagine luring groups of enemies into tall grass or a wheat field and then burning it down from the sides to trap them and kill them. Or going into a forest and using explosives or some overpowered projectile weapon to cut down trees in an instant and make them fall on enemies and have it even roll down if it’s a hilly place.
I wish game studios would stop focusing on graphics ( cuz everything looks amazing these days) and focus on making more engaging stories/narratives and gameplay
More games should be have stylized graphics. They age a lot better that way. A game like Legend of Zelda wind waker still looks good because of its strong artstyle.
You say that. But if a triple a game came out today looking like half life 2 you’d be calling the graphics ass and complaining no matter how solid everything else was. We’re more forgiving of indie and old games because it’s what we expect. But we expect good graphics from big budget games and everyone would complain if they didn’t have them.
We actually can stop now. So many modern games lately are so full of glowing particle and special effects that it’s sometimes impossible to see what’s even going on anymore.
The thing is, though, that someone certainly said this exact thing in 2004 and used Out Run from 1986 as an example.
Why would you want to stop progress? It’s not just about the “amount of graphics”, it’s just as much about accessibility. Do you realize why we only have a very few games from 2004 that look acceptable today? Because it required the absolute best of the best of the best to pull something like HL2 off in 2004. Now, everyone has access to fantastic engines with mind-blowing systems.
Yes, the gaming industry has turned to absolute shit, but that cannot in any way be blamed on graphical fidelity.
yeah, but the more we can minimize the hardware, the better, imagine not having to have that big tower next to you heating up your room, but still have the power of it packed into a small power bill friendly box.
Instead, focus on a quality game with good story, good game mechanics, and enough content that comes with the base price of the game to keep players around for a long time. Nope….that’s too much to ask, now they’re pumped out yearly with 0 effort and the player count is less than 200 in less than 2 months
Graphics are cool and all but can I get a functional game with a fun gameplay loop? No? Ok 🙁 time to get 40 bear skins and question npcs that all have the same dialogue
Meanwhile gameplay hasn’t improved since the Wii, or maybe Oculus rift?
I’m currently replaying Half Life 2 and the expansions and it’s incredible how pleasing it still looks and how damn good the facial animations are.

Ya focus on interesting content now lol… like we had with shitty graphics
Superior graphics < Story plot & enjoyable games.
Nope.. We can only stop once we have 1:1 photorealism in VR..

I expected the bottom panel to say “wow these graphics suck”
In the past the games were good but the graphics were shit
Today the games suck but the graphics are lit
yesterday i dusted off Stalker.. that game looked quite alright for game 10+ years old
maybe instead of awesome gfx devs should aim for better ai.. that’s where we need improvements.

Bottom panel. I keep getting frame rate drops, I should be able to play this game at a consistent 120fps wahhhh wahhhhhhh
I still have those exact speakers from 2004
although graphics are important, im not a fan of buying a pc worth of 1092327$ so i can see a couple of hairs more
This is how I feel about halo reach graphics
I remember being blown away by tie fighter
This was me playing Genesis games after Colecvision gaming for years. Lol
For real, we got better graphics at the expense of game optimization…

I wish half the effort that goes into graphics went into gameplay.
By gameplay I mean making the game fun not a grind fest that can be avoided with some credit card details.
I basically only buy indie games now 😞
i unironically agree, we’ve come far enough, i have no idea what we have left to gain

CRTs were unicorn jizz tho
