I think this was the accidental greatness of FPS games like TFC and CS and the other Half-Life 1 mods back 20-25 years ago that we have lost in the modern era. We didn’t really have skill-based matchmaking. You just joined a game and played, and if your team was absolutely dominating you could swap to the other team or leave the game or whatever, and nobody gave a shit if you did. It was similar with RTS games. You just kind of played against people, sometimes there was a massive disparity in skill, and it wasn’t the end of the world.
Now we have matchmaking scores and ranks and cosmetics and penalties for leaving. You need to carve out a portion of your day to play the game.
That turned into a bit of an old man rant, but I miss the simplicity of just jumping into a game and doing a little pew pew without any expectation of anyone being good or even trying.
the most toxic people in any competitive environment are always going to be the middle of the pack for a ton of different reasons but id say the biggest is they arent willing to accept they are the problem so they cant improve/change.
I hate skill levels complainers (bane of my existence in HotS, my moba of choice), buuut… the height axis of this graph measures the “percentage of players”, i.e. a numerical amount of people in that bracket. It doesn’t measure “skill level of people within each bar” as it seems to imply.
I’m confused… yeah, the population is similar… that… that doesn’t mean it’s the same skill level lol… Especially in a game like LoL, which is clearly what this comic implies with the weapons the character are wearing, if you think there is no skill difference between a silver and gold or a gold and plat or a plat and diamond, then your face is deeply buried into a mountain of copium lol
I’m thinking this would make more sense if the gold player was just stepping on the first rung of the gold bar instead of being on top of it. The current picture insinuates that the best silver player is about as good as the best gold player which simply is not true. They are slightly less than the bottom gold player.
Its so funny because sometimes the difference between medals is literally 2 games yet some fucking idiots act as if they were in a different plane of existence.
My favorite was in PUBG. They created a whole new split of a dying game to create a “competitive” mode, with ranked lobbies.
Of course, the player base couldn’t support it, so you had players of every rank in matches. Except you had skill rank restrictions on your team, as well.
So effectively all it did was restrict friends from being able to play together.
Doesnt the data as it is presented here justify the comment of the gold guy? If gold players are the biggest population, then it should be easy to populate a game with only gold players.
But the truth is that there is barely any skill difference between gold, silver and bronze players
In csgo theres a trend with people who reach mg(mid range player) to turn into rank elitists who absolutely refuse to play with anyone 1 or 2 ranks lower than themselves. While people in the highest ranks don’t tend to care if they play with lower ranked players
Part of why I’ve grown to dislike competitive games as I’ve gotten older is the overabundance of the mindset many people seem to have. That mindset being;
Anyone below me is trash and isn’t worth my time.
Anyone above me is a try hard basement dwelling loser.
People need to chill out and appreciate competition can be fun without taking it so seriously and deriving so much of your self worth from a *game.*
The graph confused me until I realized gold is like middle of the pack ranking here lol. I was like “how is the top skill rank also the highest % of players” I see now though. Gold is just barely understanding the game.
This doesn’t bother me.
What bothers me is this necessity to have “seasons” and getting my rank erased by inactivity.
So, If I work, have a family and a social life and stop playing CSGO for a while and go from AK or Gold to silver 1, playing with unskilled people or against smurfs should motivate me to keep playing?
I have no idea who created this whole idea, and bringing fomo into games, but it sucks major balls…
I think you misunderstand the graph a little… The difference between them indicated by the graph is the amount of players in their ranks and not their skill level..
the human need to feel superior to other humans will always be funny to me
especially as someone who actually is superior
The bronze player on their team then proceeds to carry the game.
THIS IS ROCKET LEAGUE!

I’ve been called “hardstuck” by a bronze player.
We were in normals. I don’t even play ranked. The last time I did I was in Silver.
LoL, Zed and Draven

the bronze smurf about to carry:
population does not equal skill.
Everyone below my elo sucks, everyone above my elo is a sweaty tryhard.
Looking at YOU APEX LEGENDS!

I love to know im in the 0.1% of player, just not the good end of the .1%
MHA Class 1B vs Class 1A vibes

That graph is shit
That’s not at all how elo-esque systems work lmao
Overwatch players on quickplay Calling my a “plat” after checking my profile and seeing I played like 12 matches of comp 5 years ago.
Bro, i got matched with you, If I suck then so do you.

How a feel about being hard stuck plat in RL
Non competitive PvE is so much less toxic and fun

In my experience it never changes.
“Morons I’m surrounded by morons”
The absolute clown fiesta it’s why I quit LoL on PC.
Because the trolling, greifing, and afk never stopped.
My mental is not strong enough to deal with it.
I have no idea what any of this means. What game is this referencing?

you clearly didnt play overwatch 2 during the ranked apocalypse when literal top500 players were matching with silvers

Hardstuck third-lowest ranks (usually third-lowest in most games) always have the largest egos and the worst skill.
I haven’t really joined into any of these ladder system games.
So someone that is just average at the game could easily bounce between bronze/silver/gold.
Then you’d need something to set you apart from being average to either land in iron or platinum?
Never seen so many solo players in a team based game
