Always the center square on Hollywood Squares. Very risqué. Remember him well.
Of course we know him. It’s the worst villain of them all!

Do the youths these days know Charlotte’s Web? He was a great Templeton in the old animated movie.
“Hey, isn’t that the voice of Templeton?” — someone, maybe
Inspiration for Roger The Alien’s voice on American Dad.
He was a comic genius.
Steve Carell once said that the best line to say when doing an impression of Paul Lynde is to say “Okay, Mr. Poopy-pants!”
One of my favorite podcasts mentions him a lot, only because one of the hosts has a pretty good Paul Lynde impression but he does it accidentally all the time, then bemoans that no one gets the reference.
Podcast is Hey Riddle Riddle for the curious
“When a man falls off a boat, you should yell ‘Man Overboard!’ What should you yell if a woman falls off a boat?”
“FULL SPEED AHEAD!”
Even with us Gen Xers these reruns aired quite a bit, before and after they rebooted the show with the 80’s era version. Paul Lynde informed the comedy sensibilities of so many of us.
He was hilarious.
Every time they asked Paul his first question, he always had a zinger.
Loved him in Bye Bye Birdie.

I dare you to watch the entirety of his Halloween special on Amazon Prime. Peak 70s variety show television.
Most people don’t know this, but he was a homosexual. True!
“You’re the world’s most popular fruit. What are you?”
“Humble.”
“The hills are alive…” was very clever and very quick, I got a good chuckle out of that one.
A nice insight on his life and career over on YT

If Paul Lynde says a french 75 is a drink, you best believe he knows damn well what he’s talking about.
Best Paul Lynda ever. “ Do frogs croak under water? His answer was “ if you hold their heads under long enough they do”
The US needs to do more panel shows like the UK does. You’ve an amazing amount of stand up and comedy talent full of wit and the capacity to use it but the closest to a panel show these days is Dropout TV (which is amazing).
Circle gets the square
Paul was very funny, but the jokes on the show were scripted. I remember he was once asked: “Are motel owners legally required to change sheets after a guest leaves?” His answer: “If it’s messed up, it was great!” Which didn’t make a lot of sense.
A few minutes later he was asked, “Can scientists tell a person’s sex just by looking at their hair?” “If it’s messed up, it was great!” He had given the joke answer one question too early. I was amazed that they didn’t edit that out.
