Van Morrison, 1972. How do you deal with a musician whose songs you love but who is kind of a shite?

I don’t require everyone in the world to agree with me.
Good question. We must learn to appreciate that even a flawed individual can have moments of creative inspiration.
Add Clapton to the list
Moondance came on the radio the other day and I had to ask myself the same question.
Like Neil Young ?
I ask myself this about Kanye West and a few others.
I have, finally, had to resign myself to the fact that not everyone shares my values and worldview. I appreciate artists for what they have to offer while disagreeing with other parts of their lives.
You can make money with that black soul music when you get a shithead Mick to sing it.
Trust the art, not the artist.
Yeah well, it could be argued that Dylan has morphed into the antithesis of everything that he once was and stood for, can be extremely selfish and self-absorbed on-stage, sometimes to the point of facing his back to the audience for much of the set.
But still…
We love and appreciate his music and musical legacy:)
I’ve seen 100 bands in concert, Van Morrison ranks dead last.
Art <> Artist
Everyone’s an asshole. You never want to hang out with your heroes.
Do you mean kind of a pain in the ass to work with and a flinty personality, or a racist conspiracy theorist?
I try to separate the music from the person. I’m very much a “just shut up and sing” guy. I don’t care about your political beliefs whether you’re Toby Keith, Ted Nugent, Mike Ness, or Neil Young. Your talents in singing, playing an instrument, or songwriting doesn’t make you any more politically savvy than the next person, so I’ll just tune that out.
What does irk me is an artist that is rude to his fans. Many years ago I attended a Gordon Lightfoot show and he was extremely rude to the crowd because we didn’t warm up to the album he was trying push. He basically lectured us about our musical taste and refused to play his older stuff. I haven’t bought any of his stuff since.
I just listen to Weird Al and never have that issue.
Kind of? This guy is on the same level of self self important assholery as Kanye…. Just not nearly as rich.
I once was at a show in Austria where Van was angry at the drummer for playing ‘too loud’ and threw all of the drum microphones on the stage and ruined the mix for the audience.
It’s natural to have opposing views from a different generation. Clapton, Morrissey, Johnny Rotten, Pete Townsend, Van Morrison are all huge dickheads. I’m glad I was able to explore their catalogs before I learned their politics
His coked up version of “Caravan” from The Last Waltz gets him a pass in my book for a lot of what he said and did later in life.
He’s in good company, I will have to say that, I’ve been disappointed by a bunch.
How do you deal with a comedy genius, who is a heinous monster?
Yeah…having that problem now that I know what a racist shithead Clapton is…
He looks like Michael Ian Black!
piracy
It’s the remix edition, hot and fresh out the kitchen…
I’m a jazz fan- you develop a strong skin for that sort of thing very fast.
we are all kinda shites
some of us just write good songs about it
Protip: don’t learn about the musicians/artists/actors you like. appreciate their product but don’t view them as “people”. athletes too.
Listen to covers.
We lived in SF late 70’s, early 80’s when Van Morrison lived in Marin County. He was always sublime when he played the Great American Music Hall. Perfect small venue. He also frequented the San Rafael coffee shop owned by 2 Irish brothers we knew. He had a reputation for being well, distant. I suspect his gruff exterior may be a shield of sorts. Don’t agree with his stance on vaccines but I’m a HCP.
He is amazing. Why did you post this?
His archive is too vast and too excellent that he can say/do whatever the fuck he likes and will never loose me as a fan.
Why a shite?
Maybe one day they can just be artists and shut up outside the art
Once the artist puts their art into the world, they don’t get a say in how or why people love it. It’s become something apart from them. So I don’t feel conflicted about separating art from artist. Now depending on how shite they are I might decide to not give them my $ – I love Woody Allen movies, for instance, but I buy secondhand or pirate them, cuz I want to appreciate the art without condoning the artist
You listen and enjoy the music. After that you remember what a shit he is. Best of both lol
Eric Clapton and Ted Nugent both hit that category for me, dug their music when I was a teenager but man how they turned into toxic assholes, especially Ted. Jeeze what a piece of shit he turned out to be.
