The camera was dug out of 12 feet of ash two years later.
That is not the eruption from May 18. On May 18, 1980, the mountaintop sky was not particularly clear.
Given how clear the sky is in the photo and whether it was taken during the June 12, July 22, or August 7 eruptions, it was most likely one of the latter two.
I have a similar picture on the roof of our home in Hillsboro OR. I thought it looked like The Bomb erupting over the West Hills.
I agree with another post—this isn’t May 18th. That wasn’t visible as much. A few weeks later the ash came in another eruption and the “fun” was over.
