To back up what many people are saying on the “What famous place is not worth visiting?” thread on r/AskReddit, here is my fiancé fulfilling her lifelong dream to see the Mona Lisa in person.

Huh, I have zero urge to visit now
That look says it all
This is the first of many pictures where you go to other “places not worth visiting” and she makes this face at all of them.
Well give you a couple of years before the coffee table book needs to go to the printer.
I went and saw The Scream when I visited Oslo and it was like this. A large tour group rushed to that room as soon as it opened and got selfies with it. They didn’t care about any of the other art. And there were a ton of pieces in the museum that were worth the visit.
Yup. That was my experience as well. And we were hustled past it because it was so crowded. The Louvre in general was amazing though.
Did enough morons take flash photos and the screen close on you? That’s what happens to me when I went never got to see it up close at all
Try the Vatican… it’s a million times worse. But I have to tell you if you travel again for those things connect with city wonders. They do VIP trips of those places before they open. You just have to wake up very early it’s a bit pricy but totally worth it. The vip groups are about 10 ppl max and they are usually connected with the management of the facility.
I see you went on a slow day….
very short video of what she can see
https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=qlnT7_ioAVg The Wedding Feast at Cana (by Veronese) is huge and very good
The 9/11 memorial was very aggravating for me. Whole lot of kids taking cute selfies and shit, not realizing that 3000+ people lost their lives there just 20 years ago.
Hilarious!
This is why I’ve never made the trip to see Starry night. I would want to be alone
That is what I tell everyone. That the painting is so small and you can’t get near it. But, enjoy the rest of the museum. I loved the detail on the ceiling of all things.
While the Mona Lisa itself may be overrated, the Louvre is a fantastic museum with many other paintings and sculptures worth seeing.
While we’re at it, skip Machu pichu. It’s just like this shit where every instagram attention whore obstructs every view with their narcissism
It is small…
It’s actually a good photo. Both your girlfriend and Mona have enigmatic expressions.
What famous place is not worth visiting? WUHAN
Was in Paris in 1990 on a high school euro tour. We were told we could either see Paris or the Louvre, as they’d both take the whole day. We chose Paris.
The Mona Lisa is not impressive and I still don’t understand why people make such a big deal of it. There is a painting on the opposite wall, facing the Mona Lisa, that is huge, like 6 foot tall by 10 foot wide and so much more colorful. I was way more impressed by that huge painting than the tiny Mona Lisa.
I’ve been able to enjoy that painting without such massive crowds. Don’t go in peak tourism season.
Don’t go to see Stonehenge. You will be greatly disappointed. Check out a picture on the internet I think you’ll get the idea. It’s a pile of rocks.
Loved the Musee d’Orsay, didn’t care much for the Louvre. Didn’t care much for notre dame, loved Sacre Coeur. Alot has to do with preference really.
Even though the viewing circumstances are far from optimal, when I did see it I could see what all the fuss is about. There is something special about it.
If the point of the visit is a picture with the painting, you have the wrong purpose. The need to document everything is what is ruining the actual experience, and that extends to all the others with their phones out. Same to those who video during a concert. Live for the experience and the memory. I can still remember the chills I got standing in front of Guernica at the Prado. Amazing to see something in person that I had studied.
Honestly this is just me but, art is soooooo overrated.
Wow it’s way smaller than I thought.
You really do get a sense, though, that many if not most of the visitors are just there to tick off the things their guidebook told them to see. In the room of 19th century French paintings, for instance, there’s a huge crowd around *Liberty Leading the People* (in all the guidebooks), a smaller crowd around *The Raft of the Medusa* (in some guidebooks) and almost no-one looking at the spectacular *Coronation of Napoleon* or the incredibly powerful *The Lictors Bring Brutus the Bodies of his Sons*.
Mona Lisa:

Everyone who came to see it:
The Louvre is amazing. The Mona Lisa not so much.
Yeah, I enjoyed going with my fiancé and we managed to get into a good position to see / take a picture. But I do think it was quite the experience trying to get through the crowd.
When we went to see the Crown Jewels (uk) there was a travelator which meant everybody gets a close up and crowds can’t gather. Any major piece that’s recognised around the world needs one imo.
