Sweet summer child, that was not how Warcraft was then. Warcraft was always the cartoony one, except for their cinematics. If it’s possible to look up the old gaming message boards for MMORPGs, you’d see tons of people complaining that a Warcraft MMO would be too cartoony and not-serious (as if grimdark = serious).
For gamers in the 90s/00s, Warcraft was the game that gave the units silly dialogue and let you blow up sheep by clicking on them with a mouse too much.
What a disingenuous picture, I could just as easily do a “warcraft then” with a pic of a baby murloc plush and a “warcraft now” pic with some big ass dragons battling eachother
It’s pics like these that give “old school” wow players the reputation of sour grape nostalgia babies
My nostalgia always fires full steam when I see anything Wotlk. That was just the greatest time I ever had in gaming. But although I loved that expansion the most, I guess it was mostly the people that made it great.
That’s why it’s impossible to relive or recreate. The people are different.
Yes WoW had some pretty sick and “serious” art and some bits and pieces of dark stories, but let’s be honest, it was always the “cartoony” game with a classic adventure story which was overall epic, but not that dark.
Also isnt the bottome image from Arc Light, the upcoming mobile game?
This was maybe the case back in Warcraft 2 tides of darkness days… but that was still only in the booklet art. In game you had ogres arguing with their two heads and workers saying leave me alone in cute voices.
“Waaaah, everything was all so cool an arbitrary, unspecified number of years ago that totally doesn’t correlate to the last time I didn’t have adult responsibilities!”
Nah. I do feel like WoTLK was WoW in its emo phase, but in all seriousness, the game has never been anything but cartoonish. It’s supposed to be exaggerated fantasy. This is just an extension of that.
Also, my favorite line is from Warcraft II, where if you keep touching your Orc, he’ll say “me not that kind of orc!”
ITT: half people who haven’t played in 10+ years complaining about the current game, and half people who haven’t played at all complaining about the game.
do people realize that you *dont* have to play every game made my blizzard? Diablo immortal, now whatever this game is called. Like, it’s okay if you dont like it or dont want to play it. Other markets exist, and this game is clearly made for a different market. And that’s okay.

Still going strong! Crazy.

So you don’t play WoW?
Your characters were called toons for ages, what a disingenuous meme.
Blizzard has always smooshed high drama and campy humor together — it’s been their brand since the original Warcraft.
Nope just (some of the) concept art, WoW has always looked like that.
All of those characters in the botton picture was in WC3 except the pink gnome
The bottom is a mobile game. I mean there are tons of reasons to shit on WoW. You could of picked a better one.
Id suggest deleting your post, because you clearly know nothing of what youre talking about 🙂
revisionists coming through acting like WoW wasn’t the MMO for casuals.

most boomer post ever

I wish there’d been an RTS sequel to Frozen Throne, those campaigns are were great.
I never played WoW and even I know the gameplay was more cartoony than the cinematics.
Blizzard fans then: =)
Blizzard fans now: =(
Warcraft became Hearthstone.
They wanted us to give everything.
Yall feel like pumpkin spice latte chicks with this shit.
Op has a hateboner
100% miss the blizzard of the old days.
I always hated wow for killing off warcraft RTS
Two TOTALLY different games lol Also, Go back and play some old Warcraft RTS… Silly AF
People were literally complaining about WoW being too silly back then, what are you talking about
Dont get me wrong blizzard sucks but this is not the reason

It’s hilarious, and very cartoony.
Excuse me, [Warcraft then.](https://bnetcmsus-a.akamaihd.net/cms/blog_header/7c/7C1270MW05D11553538242655.jpg)
Imagine genuinely thinking this when they used to have commercials with Mr. T as a “Night Elf Mohawk” throwing “Mohawk grenades”
That’s weird. It’s almost like you’re talking about two different games. [This is wow now.](https://bnetcmsus-a.akamaihd.net/cms/blog_header/yo/YOOUZRUGOKGQ1683590075673.png)
“I think I can see my house from here!”
“Stop tickling me!”
It never was that serious.

This looks like the revisionist history Wrath Babies would make. WOTLK was the beginning of the end, not the peak design of a bygone era.
Fortnitify everything
Warcraft was birthed from a failed pitch to games workshop to adapt the Warhammer franchise. It’s been watered down continually since.
For the longest time I hoped and dreamed about a Warcraft 4. But now I dread the moment they announce it.
I don’t play WOW. But I’m going to assume OP is leaving out a lot of context here just to generate outrage.
Lmao you can complain with how Blizzard has been treating their game lately but to complain for artstyle is gatekeepy
Let’s be real. WarCraft never looked like the image on top – just the advertizements…
