This is what $100 Psi-cadet backers of Psychonauts 2 received as their “Physical copy of Psychonauts 2 for PC & Mac with campaign exclusive slipcase” two years after the release date.

Seems cool to me
rugpul? wen rug?
I mean, nobody uses discs anymore, most computers don’t even come with a discdrive. $40 more for a $20-ish USB drive, the exclusive “slipcover,” keychain, and can, that’s not as bad as some stuff?
I’d happily buy it off of you, I think it’s kinda neat!
That’s honestly a way better value then I’d expect these days. It’s probably got the full game on that drive, a flash drive is generally more durable then a DVD or bluray disc, it’s got the key chain, as well as an actual case for the drive itself. I’d be happier with that then a jewel case with a disc fr.
Can I have it if you don’t want it?
Yikes, a flimsy looking metal tin and a cheap USB drive with a sticker slapped on it ain’t worth $100 and a 2 year wait. I’d be pissed.
For added context, the cover of the tin has the title printed on, not embossed and the slip cover is a green sleeve with the ESRB rating and title again. Also with it came a bronze Psychonaut badge and the USB comes with both Psychonauts 1 and Psychonauts 2 on it.
I wouldn’t be able to do anything with a physical copy of a PC game, if I got it. So I certainly wouldn’t pay for it.
An Altoids tin, cheap keychain, and USB drive… they really went above and beyond, huh?
I’m a huge fan of both games, but this is a certified bruh moment.

What did you learn?
This is why you don’t kickstart or preorder.

Very Cool!!!!!
people who expect their backer reward be of equal value to their pledge, dont understand what crowdfunding is and shouldnt engage with it.
Did they at least give them the Altoids that were originally in the tin?
What do you expect from a $2.4 trillion dollar company?
The hurt would outweigh the anger.
Thank you Microsoft
“Couple more, and you could have yourself a cocktail, hahaha””
So, what have we learned today?
Kickstarter is not a sales platform. You’re not buying $100 worth of game. You’re donating $100 to someone who wants to make something and that’s it. If you get anything at all in return just consider it an unexpected bonus.
If you want to get $100 worth of game in return for your $100, wait until it launches and buy it retail.
Enjoy
I dig the keychain. But yeah… I feel like that’s probably not $100 worth of value there.
That’s an Altoids tin.
Crowdfund and find out
People seem to not understand the point of a physical game. It’s nice to have something to put on the shelf.
“And that’s when things went from tardy to retardy”
After buying Spacebase DF-9 and having double fine abandon it mid-development, I kind of realized that you it’s hard to hold people to account, double fine in particular, within pre-purchase schemes
I must be in the camp where I am the only one that finds this enjoyable. I don’t want a disk, I want a copy of the game I can actually install. Sure the USB drive is likely pretty cheap, and it is a little tin. But this is all perfectly able to be displayed, which is its primary focus.
You got the game (both of them actually) and a neat little thing no one else has. Sounds worth the $100.
Isn’t the premise of Kickstarter that you back a project and at set levels get rewards for your contribution? If they had mock-ups of what you should’ve gotten that’s one thing but otherwise you got what I imagine was advertised. A copy of the game and a slipcase.
It’s disappointing, I get that. You probably expected more but Kickstarter isn’t a new platform and this has happened before plenty of times. Aren’t there projects that still fail to deliver anything after taking money? For Kickstarter and other backer based sites I try to remember that I’m supporting a product first. If you wouldn’t support them to help the game made for $100 then go to a lower level. Without mock-ups of what is promised you’re stuck. On the other hand if it’s like the Fallout 76 pre-order bags you could maybe complain but ultimately you were paying to support the game being made.
In case this comes across as a “you got what you paid for, shut up” comment I don’t mean it that way. Kickstarter and other sites aren’t guarantees of anything but they do help some cool projects happen. Yes you’re allowed to be disappointed but you also got what you wanted – the game made although it took a while and from what I’ve read updates were few. It’s a risk every time you back something.
That’s a bummer, but it was a sick game.
Double fine cheating consumers again? Who could have guessed!
Give me my fucking refund for spacebase
What did they expect? Don’t give your money to capitalists if you don’t want to get ripped off
i dont know what you expected from a small studio that crowdfunded the game
Psychonauts 2 was crowd-funded?? I thought Double-Fine had backing from Microsoft because they owned them and could make the game! I vaguely remember reading that the boss battles were gonna be tame but then Microsoft bought them and DF were able to make the game as they intended.
NEVER PREORDER
Now that’s just insulting and people who’re able to do so should definitely go and sue them
I was a $100 backer. I was happy with getting an awesome game + the figurine + watching the development. To me this was just a nice extra.
I always assume the money is gone when I back something like this. If this stuff bugs you, you shouldn’t be crowd sourcing.
Having any expectations from a Kickstarter campaign was your first mistake, dude. Just treat it as donating to your favourite game creators. And let’s be honest, Psychonauts 2 was worth it.
