This is Charles Jackson French. He was a Petty Officer First Class in the US Navy during WW2. In 1942, French tied a rope around his stomach to swim injured sailors in a raft to safety. There were 15 sailors in the raft. The water was heavily shark-infested. He swam for about 7 hours straight.

This is awesome 👍
I love hearing about some of the old heroes that history seems to have let fall through the cracks
They don’t make them like that anymore
My grandmother’s oldest brother was in a ship that was sunk crossing the English Channel during WW2. My grandmother learned about it at the same time she learned he was rescued after swimming to safety, which undoubtedly saved her and her family a great deal of misery, because you see everyone in the family knew he couldn’t swim.
When he came home my great-uncle explained how he managed to paddle to safety in the middle of churning waters. “Turns put you can learn to swim real quick with the right motivation!”
Even though it’s not bad in military terms, the word petty in a job title messes with my head.

Ladies & Gentlemen, this is a real hero.
I’m surprised they allowed him to get a photo. So many great stores of heroes who were oppressed and never acknowledged for what they needs to be told.
Bravo to a real hero! He is rocking the pea coat while his lady is killing in that fur coat and hat. Gosh, the guy in back has a leather jacket on. This is an epic coat photo!
Should have received the Medal of Honor.
They should make a movie about him
Bad ass mofo right there
Demand he get a statue!
