This is one of the still photos taken at the August 20, 1972 “Wattstax” concert in Los Angeles, CA. The film of the event is the outstanding documentary “Wattstax”
which brought together some of the top Stax Records artists to perform a seven hour show.
The top names on the bill included The Staple Singers, The Bar-Kay’s, Carla and Rufus Thomas, and Isaac Hayes, among others. Some film segments were produced separately or inserted into the film.
The film was produced by David L. Wolper and directed by Mel Stuart, the same team that did “Willy Wonka and The Chocolate Factory “ three years earlier.
For those who have not seen the film, it features some great musical segments, many of which are available online.
