*”The problem with defending the purity of the English language is that
English is about as pure as a cribhouse whore. We don’t just borrow
words; on occasion, English has pursued other languages down alleyways to beat them unconscious and rifle their pockets for new vocabulary.”* – James Nicoll, rec.arts.sf-lovers
There’s a lot of snobbery concerning spelling and grammar. The point of language is to convey a message so as long as the other person understands what you’re saying then it’s all good. It’s why I prefer [descriptivism over prescriptivism](https://www.differencebetween.com/difference-between-prescriptivism-and-descriptivism/). A lot of rigid rules were made in ivory towers when the truth is that language is fluid. It’s part of what makes it so beautiful and colorful. The inherent nature of itself.
(And also why “they don’t think it be like it is, but it do,” is correct and understandable outside of the rigidity of arbitrary language rules.)
Can we stop with “English is one of the hardest language to learn” meme?
Firstly, a bunch of languages have weird spelling rules, secondly, even if it’s one of the more complex language, the fact that it’s literally everywhere makes it by far the easiest language to learn. Also easy/hard to learn depends heavily on your native language. If you already share an alphabet with the language you’re learning, that’s gonna make it much easier. And learning/mastering isn’t the same thing either.
If every alphabet letters have one sound per letter, it wouldn’t matter how it is spelled because people will say it in only one way and everyone will know how to spell it.
AEIOU Ah eh ee oh ooh. Lets start with that.
No more “A” making ah, ay, eh, oh sounds.
Just Ah!
i wish we could reform english spelling. it really is a shit show.
spanish spelling was totally fixed and updated in the 1700s to become the consistent language written today. That was well after the printing press existed. We should do the same for english.
So what she’s saying is… It’s all the fault of the French?
This is all I and my fellow Englishmen need to know.

Hardest languages to learn?
Not by a longshot.
I also like what happens when you try to make it phonetically consistent: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A8zWWp0akUU
good video
English isn’t a language, it’s three languages on top of each other in a trenchcoat.
Informative and charming!
that’s what makes English the world toughest language

That video was very cleverly written. You have to give props to them for going an extra mile even though that isn’t the standard on youtube

Spelling isn’t so important.
What is more important is the sound per letter.
If every alphabet letters have one sound per letter, it wouldn’t matter how it is spelled because people will say it in only one way and everyone will know how to spell it.
