The old school 2D type of beat em’ ups have seen a massive resurgence over the past few years with modern day classics such as Streets Of Rage 4 & TMNT: Shredder’s Revenge aka TMNT 6.

I know it’s not a old school game but River city girls 2 came out too and did a great job capturing the same feeling as these kinda games too but is open world. Actually has the damsel from double dragons too, Marian, as a playable character. If you like these games I definitely recommend checking it out though it doesn’t take itself too seriously at all
No River City Girls?
It’s a little older but Scott Pilgrim was a great one too
If you can excuse(or enjoy) the big bouncy anime boobs, Fight N’ Rage is a first class choice as well
Some of them were made like they’re meant to eat quarters.
I’d never suggest someone do piracy but if you can find an old arcade cabinet cadillacs and dinosaurs is the shit.
These were my fav genres and games back in the day. Final Fight, Double dragons, battletoads, streets of rage, heck I’ll even throw in The Bouncer and any else like those. Only wish we could get a new modern beat em up that wasn’t pixel graphics, I still like them, but see what they can do in today’s quality.
The Roguelike mode in SoR4 is SO good imo, do not sleep on it.. loads of fun with a friend or solo
yep, what a time to be a massive fan of this genre. can’t wait for the new double dragon 😊
This is exactly why I find it insane when people say we’re in the twilight of video games. Or post an image of games from 2008 that are all 2 genres of games. I’ve never had more choices.
River City Girls is also fantastic
They’re just fun to play with other people. I mostly play single player and first person shooters, so I hardly buy games I can play split screen. Seeing fun nostalgic games like this make me want to play with friends in person. My girlfriend, her sister, and I played shredders revenge and loved it. Good fun.
Knight of the rounds, cadillac and dinosaurs, dragon ninja…
lets not forget River City Ransom Underground, fantastic game! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=us7MnovsPKs
I was a huge SoR fan as a kid and 4 (+DLC) is now my favorite in the series. My friends and I are fighting game fans so the juggle/combo system was a blast to learn and abuse in co-op.
Double Dragon Neon was a good beat em up in the ps3 days. And Scott pilgrim too.
I hope we’ll see more of this. Old school beat em ups were my favorite genre growing up.
The hours I sank into Maximum Carnage and that Battletoads/ Double Dragon crossover. So awesome!
I had no idea that there was a Toxic Avenger video game! I need to play this.
I highly recommend Streets of Rage 4.
The mechanics it has feel really good and fresh once you get used to them. The game is very difficult, but once you get in, it feels so satisfying to play. It feels like one of those action movies!
Great game.
Shredder’s revenge is great. I hope they do a sequel
Beat ’em ups were the best stuff to play with my bro, as a kid.
Glad to see them coming back.
Check: Mother Russia Bleeds.
SO4 is a brilliant addition to the SOR franchise. Like how the people who loved to make games made the original, this was also the case for the team behind SO4. And due to that we got something amazing. They did not even plan DLC for it but they ended up making some.
ALL HAIL STREETS OF RAGE 4 THE GOAT AND REVIVAL OF BEAT EM UPS
Compared to Dragons Crown, Castle Crashers, and Streets of Rage remake: the past generation of brawlers has been … let’s say underwhelming. For example, Streets of Rage 4 would need something like 3 or 4 entire full blown DLCs the size of it’s first one to rival SorR.
Here’s some classic gems of honorable mentions
Okinawa Rush
Figh N’ Rage
River City Underground
Final Fight LNS
It’s a fantastic genre I always loved and always will love
Usually cheap, tons of fun both alone and with friends or online randoms, great replayability due to many characters, and sometimes paths and endings, simple gameplay
Streets of Rage 4 was my game of the in 2020. Still play it all the time.
If TMNT4 is Turtles in Time and TMNT6 is Shredder’s Revenge… What’s TMNT5?
Anyone try the Cobra Kai games? The first one was okay. Worth a shot if you love the TV show and beat em ups
Have not tried the second one yet
SoR4 is fucking amazing. Never got too into this genre until I played it,
Holding out hope for a killer Golden Axe reboot
Path of the warrior is an awesome VR homage to these games.
They should also bring back MK Shaolin Monks
Age 30-50 is when nostalgia hits the brain the hardest and trust me companies are intensely aware of that fact.
What! A new double dragon?!
These games have been awesome. Both streets and shredders are incredible games. Can’t wait for toxic crusaders either!
Shredder’s Revenge was just made with so much love and charm that it was impossible not to love it if you were a fan of the original turtles arcade.
Really, really fun game.
Ohan I didn’t know there was a Toxic Crusaders one coming out. I can’t fucking wait. I love beat em ups so much
Gimme Battle Toads! I NEED IT
Simpsons….we’re waiting for you.
I played so much Streets of Rage growing up. Those games by themselves made buying a Genesis worth it.
