Nah. Not for me. I was too busy still playing Doom 2 and other games.
Sure, I played Tomb Raider… but I didn’t care at all. Maybe 80s madonna like polygonal boobs do it for you, but I didn’t even notice at the time.
I played the game, finished it, thought it had a lotta platformy crap and ledge grabbing, but it was ‘meh’.
It sure didn’t define anything for me.
I really liked the Legacy of Kain series though. Soul Reaver, especially.
I have no doubts it was influential, but to the level you’re selling it, not so much.
It won a single game of the year award in ’96, one in ’97, and barely broke the top ten in games of ’96, the year it released. It also ranked basically nowhere in else in ’97, despite releasing 3 months prior to the end of ’96.
Highly impactful but hard to say generation defining when you look at the landscape of games in 1996. This is a year that saw Mario 64, Resident Evil, Diablo, and Quake… 1997 we got Symphony of the Night, Final Fantasy 7 and GoldenEye…
Tomb Raider certainly helped usher in the first true 3D platformer worth paying attention to though and was a fantastic game. It is definitely worth mentioning alongside all of the games listed.
I had a demo disc with Tomb Raider on it and the controls were so jank. I couldn’t get into it. Games like Tomb Raider were why I preferred 2D games at that time.
It seems that folks don’t understand the difference between influential, critically-acclaimed and popular. OP is saying that Tomb Raider was an influential game, not that it sold the most or won a bunch of awards. It was considered groundbreaking at the time and helped to popularize action-adventure games and platformers with female protagonists. The UK even put Lara Croft on their postage stamps!
Like the way that the Velvet Underground was a massively influential band , because they inspired many others with their sound. The cliche was that everyone who bought a VR record started a band. But they did not sell a lot of records or win awards when they were active. (Later, they were recognized for their influence and became critically acclaimed, etc.)
Tomb raider, resident evil, and Quake all made huge shockwaves in 96. The next year FF7, fallout, starfox, and goldeneye. 96 and 97 were both insanely influential years that paved the way for a ton of games. They squeezed the most they could out of the technology of the time.
Lot of comments saying this game wasn’t influential would do well to do a basic wiki search. 95 million copies worldwide and a Walk of Game title. Get a grip.
“Tomb Raider” was to the UK what “Super Mario 64” was to the US. I replayed it several weeks ago, and it still holds up. I also enjoy some of the sequels, most notably 3.
I really don’t think this game defined a whole generation of gamers and devs.
It didn’t define anything dude, that’s a massively overreaching statement to make.
I loved this game, the puzzle aspect of it was awesome…. and it’s Laura Croft, one of the original game crushes

That doesn’t look anything at all like [M.U.L.E.](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/M.U.L.E.).

Made in my city. There is a street named after her.
We used to call games “tomb raider like” before 3rd person view was a term.

The mansion was the best part! Hours were spent on that gymnasium pole jungle gym
Tomb Raider PS1 has a certain horror aspect to it in my opinion. Couldn’t finish when I was a kid.
first time was the SATURN demo … thought it was and i quote
“a bit slow, but could go far …”
anyway, didn’t get into the series until legend on PS2
also i hate tank controls
What exactly did it influence? I don’t follow.
You can guarantee we all locked the grandpa in the fridge.
Is it just me or did i think she was super skinny in this picture for a solid minute
Man I spent so much time trying to dive over that golden torch stand in the pool room because I heard her cloths would disappear.
And now she’s a redhead with a lightsaber!
Absolute joyous memories. Remember playing this with my dad and absolutely shitting myself when the dinosaurs jumped out on the 3rd level.
Dad died 6 years ago and this is some of the fond memories I had. Was good times
Hmmm… Looks like tomb raider, but no level I remember playing.
The point of that game was to run around the mansion in a particular way to get Lara to take her clothes off right?
I never did manage to complete it

I need glasses. Thought it was an image of a chocobo
