The response to this performance led MTV to create the “Unplugged” series. Too bad they cut off the first three minutes where they play an acoustic “Living on a Prayer” as an intro. It really makes the performance.
Ma man sambora can sing wow.
And blew a hole in the ozone with all that AauaNet aerosol spray.
They need a today’s version of Max Headroom.
Blew the roof off? This was about the end of the stupid hair bands. I was a Bon Jovi fan as a young kid. Then when Nirvana came out all that music seemed stupid as hell. Which is was. Only bands in that period that stand the test of time is mayhe GnR. For sure GnR
Back in the day when the M actually stood for Music….
I saw this on television and remember being completely dumbfounded at the raw talent – two blokes with acoustic guitars upstaged everyone else that night
I’m not a big JBJ fan but this is pretty damn good.
Jon bon Ravioli
Damn, I remember watching this live.
Cross Road is a tunefest.
The soundtrack of my high school years. My gf and I listened to this song and album so often!
Damn, I missed out
This remains one of my “ guilty pleasure “ songs.
I wasn’t down with the hair stuff.
Amazing song.
Amazing song.
Look at that feathering

We will never see performances like this again.
Gave me goosebumps their voices sound so good together
Gaaah! Cut off too soon!
Back around that time my best friends girlfriend was with some of her friends and wanted to drive by his house. Well it was gated but they got out out to take a pic. That’s when they noticed Bon Jovi walking towards the gate I guess to get mail or something. She and her friends freaked out and asked for a picture. He did them all one better and said he was making lunch and invited them in. They were literally having sandwiches with Bon Jovi in his house. They got some pics and autographs then left after they ate. Said he was super nice and more normal than you would think. I was envious as hell and still am decades later.
…and thusly creating (inspiring) MTV Unplugged!
To this day I listen to Bon Jovi songs & it just pumps my blood with umpf I love it!
Talent overwhelming!
One of my classmates went to the VMA’s when the public could get tickets back in the day. She saw this performance. I remember checking out her pics, she had over a dozen with the artists that attended. This was when MTV actually focused on music.
Back in the day, MTV’s VMAs, and even moreso the Unplugged series, were a great showcase of amazing musical talent without the studio & production effects. Gave me a whole other level of respect for those artists.
I thought the lyrics to this song were trite when it came out. Now compared to todays lyrics they look like Shakespeare.
JBJ is a legend. And RS is a badass. They will forever be my faves.
I can’t think of one dude I know that doesn’t appreciate that song.
I remember watching this live as a kid.
Difficult to find a modern comparison. This song was massive.
$1000 hair style
$2000 guitar
Can’t afford to sew up the hole in his pants
Priorities
Too bad Sambora doesn’t get along with them anymore…
I remember seeing the video for “Runaway” debut on West coast late night video. I told my friends the next day Bon Jovi was going to be huge.
And…Jon Bon Jovi was/is a serious babe (to use 1989 vernacular). I think I bought a poster at Spencer’s the minute I saw one.
My mom had that same hair
You know those guitars that are, like, TWO guitars?
Damnnnnn, goosebumps over here!
All the girls were in love with Jon.
I’m still in love with Sambora
