TBS Re-Imagines Reality Hoax Series, “The Joe Schmo Show” | Teaser | TBS

  • I think the orginal Joe Schmo show was just a smidge early as a deconstruction of the relaity show genre. It was good and obviously somewhat remembered but I think it if it aired in like 2006ish as opposed to 2003 then the reality Tv overload would have resonated with an even bigger audience. But a deconstruction now in 2023 feels a little late.

  • The first season was brilliant but only because they absolutely nailed the casting of their “Joe”. He was such a relatable, kind person. I think the entire show hinges on that casting.

  • I loved the original Joe Schmo. It’s especially fun looking back and seeing Rickety Cricket and Kristen Wiig before most people knew them.

Also odd to see Jonathan Torrens in it. If the had got someone who grew up in Canada, he would have been immediately recognizable even then.

  • Looks awful compared to the original series. Some things should just stay in the past.

I liked Jury Duty’s approach to blending reality and fiction because every actor played their character as a subdued normal person, even the technology-obsessed guy. I want more “prank” shows like that, not this wacky shit where every person is an over the top stereotype.

  • I remember that the original Joe Schmo got a second season, and then a revival in 2013.

The second season was a spoof on dating shows like “The Bachelor,” and they actually got two prankees, a “Joe” and “Jane” Schmo. “Jane” actually figured out the hoax halfway through, but the producers continued the show by offering her a prize if she essentially continued as one of the “actors” and played along and maintained the deception for the rest of the series.

The third season/revival I don’t remember too much of, but it was more of a “bounty hunter” theme (the “show” was a search for a guy who would become a bounty hunter), and that that Joe Schmo also figured things out early.
