I’m not saying she doesn’t have anything to contribute, but what business does Taylor Swift have discussing directing with Martin McDonagh after directing one or two of her own music videos? This is basically her getting a free masterclass. Even her music video, which is like a high-budget high-school video project, doesn’t indicate to me that she has any innate talent for directing. She’s spending 10 minutes talking about the parallels between her video and the Cinderella story, and how the Haim sisters represent the evil stepsisters. Like duh.
What a fucking joke variety. Putting someone who has accomplished NOTHING in cinema next to established auteurs. Lost a bunch of respect for Taylor through this. She should have directed the movie, let it be released, and let the critics and audiences decide. Instead she’s propping herself up as the next Tarantino or Scorsese with zero accomplishments to show for it. When her movie bombs, this will be a complete embarassment.
This will go over well. It’s going to be funny when Swift first directorial debut is a massive critical success. Should she be in this video? Nah, but its not a big deal.
I have a lot of respect for Taylor Swift. She is, without a doubt, a very accomplished person.
But holding her up as an established Director is just wrong. I mean, I get it. It’s the ultimate promotion for her film, but I think it comes at the cost of those who have put in more more in the arena and who may have better benefited from the exposure.
No sense in arguing with money though. Commercialism wins every time.
People are insane in here getting mad about this. Can it not just be interesting that an established mid-career director is having a discussion on a massive platform with someone who is just starting out?
I feel like this was a mistake, and people will tune her out because they feel like she hasn’t “earned” it. There are so few female directors. And instead of spotlighting someone who needs it and whose work would benefit from it, they chose to grant a platform to arguably the most famous woman in the world who has only directed music videos. This isn’t really about her talent, but about the path that so many have to travel that she gets to skip.
As a Taylor Swift fan but also someone who absolutely loves Martin McDonagh(he’s possibly my main inspiration for wanting to enter the film industry), I was genuinely looking forward to this conversation. After watching, I think it’s very fair to criticize Taylor for being included in this set as I just don’t think she was able to bring that much to the table in terms of insight or perspective in the world of filmmaking. I think both her and Martin came across as perfectly charming and generally knowledgeable, but it was hard to shake the feeling that Martin was just so so much more relevant to the conversation-the best parts to me were when Taylor was talking about songs and general storytelling or Martin was talking about writing or the directing process, as those are the aspects they are each more experienced in.
At the end of the day, I’m very glad for this matchup as I think it’ll bring a lot more eyes to McDonagh and his work, specifically Banshees. But outside of the marketing and reach, I think it’s still hard to justify Taylor Swift of all people taking a spot from someone else who has more experience in this particular field.
Each year at TIFF, there is an “In Conversation With” series that talks to some of the most influential people in the industry. From the 2022 festival, Eddie Redmayne’s conversation has 9.1k views. Viola Davis and Gina Prince-Bythewood have 20k. Taylor Swift has 345k.
Like it or not, Taylor Swift drives engagement. Her fans turn out online and in person-just look at the Ticketmaster fiasco. I’m sure that they are counting on her feature film driving people to the box office in massive numbers. Until then, everyone who can cash in on these types of conversations will continue to do so.
Ah yes. Beloved director Taylor Swift.
conections, money, and white privilege matter
no other way tayalor is included as a “director” after 1 music video
This bitch aint no director man. Come on.

I’m sure everyone here will watch the full interview before commenting, right?

Ah yes I’m sure tswift will have much to discuss on balancing comedy and violence a la Seven Psychopaths.
What’s up with that thumbnail shot though? Is that funny?

Taylor Swift a director? Here, have a downvote.
Where’s the other director?
By the amount of downvotes, it looks like the Swiftie’s have entered the chat
Holy fuck these comments. Didn’t know there was a school of directors that you had to graduate from to be considered one
She directed a short and I bet her hand was held the entire way. This is a joke.

What an insult to Martin McDonagh
Lol
Taylor Swift is certainly showing herself capable at whatever she does.
Note: Just read the headline, no interest in any video.
She directs one movie, now she’s an acclaimed director lmao
White privilege !
When you have enough money to just hire people that are good at their craft to make it for you, does that really mean you’re a director?
People are insane in here getting mad about this. Can it not just be interesting that an established mid-career director is having a discussion on a massive platform with someone who is just starting out?
And this is the woman that had the audacity to write “The Man”? What a joke.
I’m so excited for when MY episode comes out
This is Like Daniel Day Lewis talking to Actor Lebron James.

Her fanbase is flooding the comments of the interview. UGH she’s so coddled.
Thanks, I hate it

List opportunity from variety to not match her with Francis Ford Coppola. People would be talking about it for ages.
I don’t want to hear it t swift haters. She’s a brilliant director
How can anyone take this seriously? C’mon now.
I sometimes record videos on my phone, so am I a director?
I thought this was a porno parody at first.
