I’m not from the U.S. I don’t get it…?
I must be slow, because my first instinct was that this was a self-aware veteran who knew his service did not benefit the people and by *that* war he meant like WW2.
Edit: And now on re-watching it Iโm doubting myself again. If he was indeed talking about the civil war, I donโt see how that constitutes a big risk (unless the risk is that people wonโt get the joke). If he was, say, talking to an Iraq war vet who regrets his service then that *would* be a risk because not everyone agrees that the war was a mistake and some people might just not find humor in the idea of someone who fought for nothing and feels remorse (I do though).
I was thinking the veteran thought he was gay.
I was thinking he meant Revolutionary war. Itโs still a funny joke.

Great joke, I feel like it could use another line to tie it up.
Whenever there’s a black person in a story along with “freedom” you can kinda guess the direction where it’s going.
On a side note, I don’t know if it counts for American WWll vets as they ‘fought for (own) freedom’. The war wasn’t really brought to the U.S. soil (yet) and they went to fight for almost like freedom of the Europeans. I think even if the Brits eventually lost to the Nazis the Americans could still defend their home anyway. Their own freedom wasn’t really at threat.
So yeah, American freedom? Thank those who fought the Brits. Black American freedom? Thank the Union soldiers.
Good joke. Nice to see some stand up on reddit that isn’t crowd work for once.
that was genuinely very funny. good one.
Excellent bit.
He looks so happy he got that big laugh from the crowd, go him!
Yes
Is the joke the fact that here hasn’t been a military engagement in the last 100 years that was about the freedom of the US citizens?
But if I had…
> *He went on to say ‘…and if I had… I would have been fighting against it.’*
I wasn’t expecting that, I should have but I didn’t, it was awesome ๐
Why does he think this joke is risky? It’s a very mild joke. I can’t imagine anyone being offended by it.
lol
Oh, it took me a while to realise he means the American Civil War because that was about slave ownership and he’s black.
I thought the joke was that he was going to thank a vet for his freedom and the dude would turn around and say ‘I’m an animal doctor, but thanks’.
The thing about Americans in wars… They think they were the best, biggest and greatest. Every movie they think they won the war. There is a big world. America is a small part of it. Imaginations and dreams are made in hollywood. Not in real life.
It’s a great joke but I swear I’ve heard this before from a different comedian.. couldn’t tell you who or when but I already knew the punchline as soon as he started
That’s a solid joke
God damn it. I was slow with this one. In my defence I’m not from the US. But when it hit, shit was gold.
When did Tiger Woods shave his head and start doing comedy?
