I was little when we had one and I couldn’t get passed a part pretty early on, so I usually ended up just playing the first like hour of the game over and over again.
Waaay ahead of its time. First console to have functional online gaming to my knowledge. In Japan you could download your games from a server. Keyboard, mouse, webcam… other accessories were planned like a memory card that could play mp3s (this was pre-ipod) and a motion sensor controller.
All things we take for granted these days but it’s such a fascinating old console. Great games too.
My parents bought me one for Christmas 98/99. over 20 years later and having completed countless games on many platforms, I still cannot for the life of me figure out what the F to do in MDK.
Shenmue on the other hand was what I skipped school for.. Yours is a lot whiter than mine though, damn sun!
Im trying to recollect all the old consoles i regret selling as a kid…got back a PS2 and gamecube…now im eyeing Dreamcasts….
But then im not sure what games i would play with it. When i was a kid i would play GTA2 and crazy taxi but dont have much interest in those now.
Anyone have any recommendations on must-play Dreamcast games? Im more of an adventure/action type. I also seem to recall…..wasnt there like…an open world Sonic game???
I still remember just walking into a toy r us, first time in the USA. Never seen a Sega Genesis, only the original Game Boy and a Nintendo.
Went to the Toy section and I saw Ape Scape on the PlayStation, some weird 3D platform on the N64 (I think it was a demo of Kirby 64).
And a Dreamcast with a demo of Sonic Adventure 2. I was just watching the opening scene multiple times and saw some kid playing as Tails on Windy Valley. My mind was fucking blown away.
I pestered my father for an entire year to buy it for me.
You know, I was recently watching the Dreamcast episode of *Wha Happun*, where Matt McMuscles brought up an interesting aspect of the console that showed a very different “What If” scenario.
To create the successor of the failed Saturn, Sega assigned R&D teams in both their Japanese and American branches to look into developing prototype console builds to be used for the then-unnamed successor console. Honestly, I think that this was part of the culture that helped kill Sega since Sega of America and Sega of Japan *hated* each other and were fiercely competitive to their own detriment; look up what happened with Geist Force and Sonic X-Treme.
The Japanese team went with a Hitachi/NEC architecture codenamed “Katana” – which is what we got. But the American team with with arcade hardware developer 3Dfx who were notable for making a number of Western-developed arcade games, and who would later be acquired by Nvidia; their hardware was condenamed “Blackbelt”. It was considered the superior version and almost became the Dreamcast’s main motherboard.
But due to their successes, 3dfx became a publicly-traded company, which meant that they were obligated to tell their shareholders about major business that they were currently engaged in. They were required to reveal their work on Katana, which many believe caused Sega to cut the deal and go with NEC due to the leak.
This worsened things for Sega for two reasons;
First of all, 3dfx thought that the deal was killed in revenge for the leak. This meant they had grounds for a lawsuit against Sega and this was settled out of court but not before having Sega pay out damages.
Second, it cost Sega one of their biggest supporters. Electronic Arts stuck with Sega for years with their sports titles and it was a major part of their revenue for years. But EA had invested in 3dfx rather heavily at that point under the assumption that they would be making Sega’s new chipset; as a result, they lost confidence in Sega and moved away from the Dreamcast.
This led to Sega spending even *more* money they didn’t have to put out the 2K brand of sports games for the Dreamcast, which couldn’t compete with EA Sports.
Having the OG model that ran CD-R was amazing for pirating games too. PowerStone and Sonic Adventures were always my go-to. Crazy Taxi and Vigilante 8 are great on it as well.
Dreamcast was overrated. Yeah, there were about a half-dozen cool games for it. And the PowerStone games are still super-fun.
But it just didn’t have enough good games. Sega screwed-up by not making it more powerful – the PS2/Xbox/Gamecube were just *so* much more powerful. Though I will say that the early PS2 games looked worse than Dreamcast games. Quite a bit worse.
And that gets to the one thing that the Dreamcast did really well – it’s video output quality was *fantastic*. And by that I mean colors just *popped* on that thing. Everything was nice and bright and saturated. Reminded me of the TurboGrafx in that regard; that was another console that just had great video output.
I will say that I miss what Sega “stood for”, up until the Dreamcast. And what they stood for (mostly) was making really great arcade games. Actual high-quality *genuine arcade games* mostly disappeared after the Dreamcast, and with the disappearnce of Sega. And, well, with the disappearance of arcades. There was something about actual arcade games that is missing from the modern gaming world. And Sega was more-or-less the last practitioner of it. Though Konami and Namco stuck around for a bit, too.
Great memories.. crazy taxi, soul calibur, resident evil code Veronica.
Sonic adventures 2 was the main game I played on the Dreamcast 🥲
Loved the WWE Royal Rumble game and Sega Sea Bass Fishing with the Rod lol
Power Stone! This game needs to come back
Still? Lol no
PSO and Skies of Arcadia
The graphics on this were so way ahead of its time.
I agreeee
I really want to play Silver again.

Spent so many hours playing Toy Commander. I really want an HD port of it.
Dreamcast was dead before my family could afford one, but so many good sleepovers at a friend’s house with this immaculate system.
I remember walking into the store and seeing those graphics and bought it on the spot. Rent was late.
Thing was the fucking best.
Only thing that killed it was the ability to make all the games for free using cd burner lol
I like the other one beside it.
Beautiful. I wish I owned one
Oh God I can hear this picture.
Wasn’t Shemmue on this system as well?
Truly will never understand why this system failed
Facts
It was alright.
Favorite console ever! E.G.G., Blue Stinger, Toy Commander, Power Stone!
*Sega!*
Power Stone needs to come back.
And a classic Phantasy Star Online server that isn’t some weird emulator that always ends up as spyware on my computer

I used to stay up all night playing Unreal Tournament on this bad boy.
Nostalgia is the only thing it’s got going for it
Had it had DVD capabilities it may have lived. Sega went out with a fantastic console.
*insert Chad music in Sega music* can someone do that
I have never owned a Dreamcast yet I still to this day own a copy of MvC2 for it
And damn good looking too
Legacy Of Kain soul reaver was amazing on DC!

Still have mine.
I wasted so much of my life to the Dreamcast. My favorite console of all time.
It’s almost like they tried to release something before the world was ready for it. And it basically killed sega😢.
Didn’t Xbox take a lot of inspiration from this console or something?
The Dreamcast was truly before its time.
9/9/99 I remember!

Power stone and mvc2 were my top played on the DC.
known as the ‘last of the fun consoles’
Switch has come close but not quite
Yeah, the SNES was great! Why is it out of frame though?
GameCube is the only console in my mind that comes close to beating this one.
Meh.
