If a copyright holder creating a new project using an old character about to enter the public domain was all it took to keep things out of the public domain, Winnie the Pooh wouldn’t have a horror movie.
This short *is* capitalizing on *Steamboat Willie* being about to enter the public domain, but it’s tongue-in-cheek. “Look at all these copies of an old-timey version of Mickey, doing all sorts of non-Disney-approved things. Come watch the originals on Disney+.”
I actually like this current incarnation of Mickey and the gang. I hadn’t never seen them and then last year my wife and I were in Disney, the show in Hollywood studios with them was sort of a get out of the sun and sitdown situation and it was pretty good.
Is this designed to buttress a legal argument to delay Steamboat Willy entering public domain?
Wow this explains why there is so much multiverse crap lately. It’s a quick and easy way to use old characters and keep the rights etc etc.
Seems similar to House of Cosbys.
