I’ve been marathoning TNG with my wife (she’s never seen it before) and we just watched this episode the other day. That bitch slap “Request Denied” was epic.
“The battle against mental illness cannot be won decisively. It is a long campaign against an enemy who never tires, whose forces swell to twice their size whenever you look away. Battle against a foe of such magnitude, who occupies your very mind… every moment you survive is a triumph against all odds. There is no more honorable combat.” – Klingon therapist.
What this clip misses is the important exchange between Data and Picard that preceded it. Data, who up to this point has been content as the 2nd officer behind Picard and Riker, finally asserts himself to Picard after the captain assigns his other senior officers to command Federation ships during a tense standoff with the Romulans.
Picard, who suddenly realizes that he’s been taking Data’s loyalty of service for granted and not treating him with the respect given to other officers, relents and offers him command of the USS Sutherland. It’s important growth for both characters that was a great development point in the series.
My favorite parts of TNG when Data hears something that his positronic matrix need a cycle to process what he just heard and he turns his head like a dog to get a better sound of that squeeky toy, just so he can smack down a dumbass.
The mark of a good XO is the ability to know his own mind, abilities, and limitations. The CO may be the face and brain of the ship, but the XO is the heart that keeps everything else running.
If anything, I see Data’s rejection of the request as recognition that the other will be a perfectly satisfactory or excellent XO, after the surface issues are dealt with.
Request denied!
*classic*
Data is my co-pilot.
One of TNG’s best episodes.
Nutrek is shit
I sympathize with the XO. I would never want a job where I take orders from a robot.
XO: I have prejudices, requesting accommodation.
Data: No.
Yup one of my favs seeing Data be a captain
He’s wrong, a Klingon would be a great ship’s counselor. All interpersonal issues resolved with that knifey arm wrestling.

Take that, bad guy from Beverly Hills Cops III!

One of my favorite scenes is Data asking for Geordi’s feedback on his poem, and Geordi hesitates because he thought he’d hurt Data’s feelings.
I am subbed to like 4 different star trek subreddits and had a double take to see a ST clip on a non ST subreddit lol
REQUEST DENIED
Is data’s art theft?
Data is just like “I missed the part where that’s my problem”
That’s the fat sucker from Xfiles isn’t it.
God damnit now you got me going down the TNG clip rabbit hole.
That’s cool and all, but I can’t get over the lack of lens flare in this scene. It could also use a Beastie Boys track.
Data is such a chad

God Star Trek used to be so well written.

I love how Data always looks down and away to process the human bullshit he hears on a regular basis. then looks up, right at you, and owns.

Fun fact, this guy was also in Ghostbusters as the violin player Dana is walking with when Peter asks her “Who’s the stiff?”
Hi. Does anyone know what episode that clip is from? Thanks.
Had to look up XO

It would be logical to build a posi-tronic brain right into the ship and make *it* captain. It could replicate bodies as needed for away missions.
