That is an epix picture!
So cool! Never seen this photo before!
September 21, 2012 in LA was the Final flight of the Space Shuttle Endeavor
You can tour that 747 at Space Center Houston.
I can look at this and say *”That’s America!”*, without irony or shame.
Why the fighter jets?
Those are NOT fighter jets Notice the NASA insignia on the rudders. NASA doesn’t have fighter nets … (Edit: not T-38 as I thought but as pointed out by Oldtimer2 they are NASA FA 18s for escort. Still not fighter jets but plenty powerful and fast). Could chase the Space Shuttle on reentry and landing approach.
The movie on that billboard came out in 2011 https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Young_Adult_(film)
This looks 100% like someone photoshopped two pics together. Or just made AI art. Unreal
This feels like a shot from Kill Bill Vol 1 but real
Epic photograph.
Thought this was a new gta heist
The image hasn’t aged well, from a brand aspect: Sprint, The Mindy Project, EPIX…
This photo is hanging on my office wall.
I saw that flying over Sacramento that day. Did a big tour of California before landing at LAX. The next big events was it’s time lapse tour of the streets of LA on its way to the museum.
I wonder how many accidents there were at that intersection
I remember our whole office took a break and went outside to see the shuttle fly by. I’ll never forget that day.
Here’s my pic from just a few minutes later, and about 1/2 mile east of this location.

Note: in this pic the gear is up. He made an initial flyover pass, then circled back around for the actual landing.
Everyone at my job went to the parking garage roof that day. We saw it, said “oh cool”, then went back to work.
I can feel the rumble of those low flying aircraft from here.
There’s so many old as cars in this picture than the one newer truck lool
This is two planes mating. You can see their previous children in front of them.
Why waste money on the fighter jets escort? Who are they supposed to fight off?

Does anyone know if the ailerons of the shuttle are active during transporting like this?
wait, is this a real photo taken? im confused
Serious question: why it is needed the presence of 2 fighter jets on American skies?
Escorted by two NASA chase planes. They stopped being fighters years ago.
Minus the Mindy Project ad, this would make a fine album cover.
I need this in 16:10 format and absurd resolution.
I was stationed in San Antonio ’82-’83 and saw some shuttle piggybacked like this land at Kelly AFB.
I wonder if NASA had to pay an excess baggage fee. Airlines love to screw you on that fee.
The Mindy Project was a great show
The need to fly the space shuttle back to base has let to some incredible creations. The Boeing SCA is a striking picture of engineering genius to this day. I really want to see it in the flesh one day.
The Soviets had a similar idea with their Buran project. They heavily modified one of their Antonov transport planes for the job. Creating a split tail design, adding two more engines, increasing the wingspan. It all came together to make an incredible plane. You could park a train in that thing.
The shuttle era of spaceflight is filled with engineering marvels
Well, technically those aren’t fighters.
Ok – I call absolute bullshit on overweight baggage fees
The NASA F-18s are soooo cool! Beautiful fighter aircraft that got to grow up to be science nerds
Great photo! That’s Sepulveda Blvd looking south towards the city of El Segundo. That area is home to a lot of aviation history, in particular, North American Aircraft – maker of the P51 Mustang and B25 Mitchell during WWII. The company was later bought by Rockwell International (now part of Boeing) who was the primary contractor on the Space Shuttle project – parts of which were built in a manufacturing plant that was located between Atwood way and El Segundo Blvd. It’s only fitting that NASA would do a flyby over that area, just south of LAX.
Was fortunate to see one on its way to California. Don’t realize just how big the Space Shuttles were until you see one on the ground. Remembering how long ago US was flying shuttles and how amazing it was is really sad.
