Coke.
Coke is why
Yea this is before they started putting a ton of high fructose corn syrup in everything
Cocaine will do that to you.
Gimme a “C”
Gimme an “O’
Gimme….
Cocaine. Just gimme some cocaine.
The life story of that Asian dancer is really fascinating, wasn’t she like the only dancer from the 1st to the last episode that was always there?
Homie was allowed to bring a basketball as a dance prop?? That is so unnecessary and hilarious.
Correction: folks are fat now lol
I mean, yeah people were skinnier on average back then, but also the dancers were chosen, not just anyone got in, and skinny was “stylish” back then.
You mean to say that people who went on a dance show, to show off their dance moves, were skinny and probably in better shape than the majority of people?
Let it whip was released in 1982…
Man, I miss watching Soul Train in the 80’s with my family. We would showcase our dance moves too when the line started. I was a skinny little kid with a big fro and a Thriller jacket, good memories.
Why so many comments pushing a partial narrative? Cocaine, these people are chosen for their youth and dancing ability, skinny was “in”, the obesity epidemic is a much bigger problem now than it was then … all of these are simultaneously true.
The food pyramid was just released. It wasn’t widely adhered to yet. And these were all dancers.
Fun fact: that’s what shape humans are supposed to be 🙂
Also, just to note, they didn’t let ugly\fat people on this tv show.
That song is so good
George was the “fat guy” on Seinfeld.
Great. Now I want some cocaine…
Everyone that went to clubs seemed to smoke cigarettes back in 1982.
Cocaine is a hell of a drug.
>Folks was skinny in the 70’s
This song came out in 1982.
Coke in the morning, coke in the evening, in the bathroom stall off the low price hookers ass. Coke all the time.
Skinny in the 70’s was a thing because the sugar lobby hadn’t yet put a chokehold on the food industry. Yes, Google the sugar lobby in the U.S.
Everyone was on coke!
80s… Obviously
The dancing seemed really off from the music?
Is that Rosie Perez coming out first?
That’s got to be the 80s.
Nobody’s gonna mention the second to last dancer had a tail?
They weren’t skinny, they were a healthy weight.
When life was great and music was fun to listen to without anger.
I’m so glad you posted this because I have had a question about soul train fashion for the longest time, and I’m hoping someone can help shed light on it.
2:02– last guy in the video. He’s got a little fox tail thing on his belt. This thing I know was on a number of male dancers at the time. Anyone know what they were called, or have any background on the little fur danglers? I’ve seen all shapes and sizes worn just by men though. They’re so rad I wanna know more about it.
No cell phones or other electronics for people to waste their time with, so we actually got out and did physical activities, thus less overweight people.
I think this is mostly due to people eating healthier and doing aerobics and cocaine.
No they weren’t “skinny” , they were normal.
I’m skinny in 2023
Coke and cigarettes will do that.
People just weren’t fat slobs back then. I can’t believe how out of shape and unkempt most young people that I see are when I go out. It’s disgusting.
Edit: I see everyone on here complaining about the sugar industry. You know that you can buy raw food (You know vegetables, fruits, grains, and meat) and prepare and eat those instead of being a lazy pizza and Pepsi pounding lardass sitting around looking at a screen all day, and it’s a lot cheaper, you know? The sugar industry only has the foothold because that’s what people want. People have just accepted and tolerated unhealthy behavior to the point that our culture is in complete decline.
This song HAD to have inspired the beat from Michael Jackson’s “Beat it. “
AVERAGE American has gained 25 pounds of fat since 1980. And they weren’t skinny, but normal. They just ate healthier and didn’t eat as many snacks and worked more physical jobs.
On average people got fatter everywhere. But still there is a huge difference between % of fat people in europe and % of fat people in USA. Not to mention people in USA have a totally different standard about what is considered to be fat, normal or skinny than here in the EU.
Why aren’t Soul Train dance lines an accepted social phenomenon? Why can’t I break it down walking into the Piggly Wiggly?
We didn’t have cable or internet or cellphones back then. Dancing, roller skating, riding bikes, was what we had.
Of course we were more skinny in the 70s,,
Didn’t have all that fast junk food,
Not sat on our arses Infront of computer screens for entertainment.
Kids and Teens were more active,
Didn’t need gyms back then unless you were into Sports, Boxing or Martial Arts.
As they say “YOU ARE WHAT YOU EAT”
Corn syrup as an additive to every single thing we eat didn’t come around until late 70s through the 90s
