It’s amazing artwork but it is not a pleasant experience being there. It’s just a dense sea of tourists and Swiss guards yelling at everyone. The experience was vaguely reminiscent of the first day of basic training.
Did they yell at you?
Is it photos in general or Flash photos they don’t want? Over time, the flash can damage the images…
Was it much smaller than you had imagined?
I’ve seen several of these paintings individually and had no idea they were all a part of the same piece of art. That’s is astounding.
Straight to hell.. do not pass go. Do not collect $200.
I hope it was worth your eternal soul….
Popes hate this one simple trick!
was also blessed to see this earlier this year! but can we talk about how overwhelming this museum is? don’t know what i was expecting but it felt like the Catholic Church/org was displaying all of the wealth it has out on the table for everyone to see. It was def too much for me and left feeling really weird about it.
Vatican guard swat team is geolocating you right now. Popecopter already warming up. Good luck.
I put my phone on the art map they give you and held it flat in front of me, I’d look at the map, take a sly pic, look at the ceiling, repeat.
My wife and I were there a few years ago. We stood in the center area for 15-20 minutes. When we exited and entered the “gift shop” she spotted a book with the Creation of Man on its cover and said to me “where was that? I didn’t see it.” To which I replied, “we were right below it. All you had to do was tilt your head back and look up.” Her response was, “I was too busy looking at all the people.”
Niente foto, NIENTE FOTO!!
It looks really great. When I was there 30ish years ago the ceiling was being cleaned for the first time. It was crazy to see the vibrant colors next to portions of the ceiling still covered in 500 years of candle soot.
Are you not supposed to take pictures?
Reminds me of school desks covered in boobs and dick doodles.
Well done. The only thing I remember about the chapel was the guys yelling “no photo!” Every 10 seconds.
I’ve been there, the big takeaway is that they are all so tiny, but when you see them in books or online they make them seem huge. They were so small I didnt even care to take a picture.
Mecha-Pope is en route to your location. Be prepared, OP. He has lvl 5 Hol(e)y Blasters
You’re the first to do this.
The vatican has a 3d ressource online where you can see all the paintings – and more: there are graffiti from restauration workers, only visible when the viewer is near the ceiling!
I heartily recommend this!
My favorite part about the Sistine chapel are the guards or whatever that watch over the crowds and tell everyone to shush
SHHHH
SHHHHH
NO PICTURES!!
We took our kids to a Vatican tour several years ago. Our youngest was a little young for it and got tired of it pretty quickly. It’s basically room after room of priceless artwork and treasures from around the world. The Sistine Chapel is the final stop on the tour. My youngest misheard and called it the “Sixteenth Chapel”, which was pretty funny since by the time we got there it felt like we HAD walked through 15 roomfuls of gold, jewels and masterpieces of art, and we were all numb to it.
NO PHOTO!!!!
I didn’t realize you were not allowed to. What is the reasoning
When I was there in 2018 there were tons of people taking photos. So many the guards couldn’t manage them all, so nobody really got in trouble.
No foto, no video, per favore
The guards: “Nooo photos!”.
SILENCIO
I remember before I went here I was under the impression that the Last Judgement was the entire ceiling, not one of many pieces of it.
NO PHOTO!
I once did a solo Europe backpack trip. I sneakingly strapped a GoPro on my day pack to get videos inside the Sistine chapel. The guard saw me and pointed to me and locked eyes.
At that moment I thought I was either A-Going to prison. B – get my GoPro taken away for good. C- get thrown in the Vatican authority and could be disposed of with no one knowing since I’m just me and the Vatican has so much power they can do whatever they want and no one would care or know.
Luckily he just told me to turn off my camera.
I tried to do this and had a nun wag a finger at me. I think she was casting a spell.
Straight to jail!
The thing is there are so much better hi res images available online it kinda wasted. Your image is potato. Sorry to break it to you.
