Did you used to blow bubbles as a kid?
Well, he’s back in town and wants your number.
Damn I had no idea. Last I saw seemed like he was doing better
[The documentary](https://youtu.be/x6sxwjRGSWs) about him that came out a couple years ago is pretty good.
Sometimes magic sounds like tape.
I emailed his wife when the 1st documentary about him came out (titled The Amazing Jonathan Documentary). She was kind of cryptic in her response, but made it seem like things might not be as bad as they actually were and that there may be more to the story. I was really saddened to see that there wasn’t.
Did he do anything other than this specific routine that’s as funny? I always like him as a kid, but this set always pops up when people talk about him.
My buddy and I saw Amazing Jonathan in Vegas in 2006 then in 2014 (I think) when he was kind of confirming he would die soon and doing a tour.
Almost 90% of the same material, practically everything from this video, and we still laughed our balls off.
Oh wow it was only a month ago. RIP.
I remember seeing his specials on Comedy Central way back in the day
I knew he’d died but didn’t realize it was this year.
Noooo I didn’t freaking know he died! I remember watching him years ago and he was hilarious. What a bummer.
I was never a fan but as a HUGE stand up nerd, I knew a lot about it and respected what he did, as it seemed other comics I love respected him too.
Sad to hear he’s gone
The best parts in this one was the jack-in-the-box and the “Do you like birds?”
Saw him perform in Vegas around 12 years ago. He was great.
There was a table of drunken party bros and their dates that were loud and kept causing disruptions and he just snapped at the table, “Did you learn to whisper in a fucking sawmill!”
I’ve loved that line ever since and that show has been my favorite Vegas experience ever.
Saw him in Poughkeepsie once it was a brilliant show years ago. Glad I got to see him live
Went to see him in Vegas. Ended up getting on stage to be his assistant, some assholes in the front row made fun of me for being overweight and he stood up for me saying they were skinny because they had aids and I was fat because every time I went over and fucked his mom she fed me biscuits. He was a funny dude.
Fuck I didn’t know he died. RIP
He was the guy who was just like open about the fact he smoked meth and crack, right? And had multiple documentarians believing that they were making the exclusive documentary about his life?
I had no idea he had passed. After I watched the documentary about trying to make a documentary about him, I expected to hear about his death any day. And then years passed and I forgot about his illness.
I didn’t know that he had died until now. I watched a documentary about him that Steve Burns did. Watching this clip I’m just smiling all the way through. His commitment to being silly and just making people laugh is amazing.
This guy was my favorite comedian when I was a young teen. He was out of his mind.
Was that Bob Saget at 1:02?
I’ve never mourned the death of a celebrity before until Jonathan died. He inspired me to become a magician and get in stage. Now I’m mourning again
I still say “Sometimes magic sounds like tape” anytime someone is in earshot when I use my tape dispenser.
The bic lighter thing was good lol
He was massive here in Australia, regularly appearing on Hey Hey Its Saturday. Ahhh, the good old simple times. Legend, especially the gorey bits.
Met him after a show once, along with Vinnie Paul from Pantera, who was in the audience. Great night.
There’s a joke in the newest season of Rick & Morty about him.
WHAT?! How was his death not covered ?! I saw zero, nada on reddit, Twitter, nothing. Was it kept hush hush or something??
Dude holy shit… I am so glad I saw him live. That man was amazing. Gonna miss him……
Wow, that’s sad to hear. I hadn’t thought about him in so long, which is a shame, because I really loved his specials on Comedy Central. I used to watch Wrong On Every Level all the time. Him and Psychic Tanya were always funny together. I appreciate him for all the laughs he gave me during those years, and watching his special now is reminding me of those positive memories. The drug addiction sucks to hear about, but I’m glad he made so many people laugh for as long as he did. Thanks for your brand of comedy, John. Rest easy.
I had no idea. What a funny and brilliant man
He was a favorite, and probably the only prop comic I found funny. Sad to hear of his passing and saddened more that I had not seen anything about it until this post. So, thank you, OP.
I want to go back 25 years and write a screenplay with Jonathan, Chris Farley, and Bobcat Goldthwait playing three brothers.
That’s all it would be called, is “Three Brothers”.
My dad went to school with him and he always said how down down to earth and funny he was.
So funny. Saw him live and he was even better than on tv.
This was the funniest fucking thing I’ve seen in a long time, thanks for sharing
“Does anybody here have five bucks?”
“Now I know a lot of people think I’m scamming them, using their money for a trick, so I’ll just put it away and skip it because there’s a lot of other shit we can do.”
Classic move 🙂
I was heartbroken the day it happened, seeing an article headline and was instantly bummed. I remember the off chance his specials were on back in the early 90’s, I was always so enthalled by his manic energy and the shock value of his gags. He was a great one.
This man was a fucking legend.
Thank you for posting this. People don’t realize the influence he had on many of the modern day mainstream comics we know today
Long story about this guy…
I spent about 15 years in higher education, hoping to one day become a dean of students. This meant I spent a number of years coordinating student life/activities for college students. There’s an annual showcase of performers who do 20 minutes of their act, and then we go to an exhibit hall, talk to their agents, and try to get them to our campus.
Some time in the early- to mid-90s (maybe late 80s), The Amazing Jonathan did a showcase. He started one his tricks. I can’t remember all of the details, but he was doing a trick where he was pouring sand into a hat, and it was supposed to disappear. Something malfunctioned, and a little door on the bottom of the table fell open, and the sand fell directly onto the stage. Some of the audience figured out what was happening, and slowly giggling started spreading across the crowd.
Jonathan picked up on the giggling, looked at the crowd like, “What?” He looked under the small table, saw the door open and the sand falling to the stage, and said, “Welp, this fucking trick’s shot!” threw the table across the stage, and went, “Okay, on with the MAAAGIC” in a real loud, obnoxious, sarcastic voice.
The crowd erupted and he had us in the palms of his hands.
This was so chaotic, and I fucking LOVED it.
Had a Christmas party where the guy they hired stole his entire show. I ruined it for him and he never came back out. I was an asshole , but fuck that thieving bitch. This dude cracked me up.
Saw him in a club in Austin TX in the late 80’s. He pulled me up on stage with him to assist in some jokes ( probably because I was the one person in the first couple of rows who looked like I did NOT want to go up onstage with him). He was, of course, very funny. He very softly let me know what was going on with each bit so he could guide to get the maximum laughs. I think he liked me because I didn’t try to be funny myself. He used me like a straight man. He bought me a drink after the show as a thank you.. Very memorable. RIP Jonathan.
I had the honor of DJing this man’s wedding, then becoming friends and a part of his circle for many years. He will be deeply missed. Thank you for sharing this.
I watched the Hulu Documentary where the documentarian keeps being surprised there’s another new documentary crew filming him. It’s worth watching because he ends up doing a really good job of making a film you just can’t look away from because it’s so entertaining.
