Is there something really obvious I’ve been missing about Sea Lions that make them capable of doing this? I never knew Sea Lions would go after a shark as prey. Or is this not typical and that’ s why it’s noteworthy?

That looks like a Stellar Sea Lion based on the head shape. They are massive, up to 2,500 pounds and 11 feet long.
