This song takes me back to the early 80s when I had a job detassling corn during the summer in central Illinois. Me and about 30 other 14-16 year olds would have to meet a bus at 4:00am to drive us out to whatever corn field we were working that day. One of the other kids would bring a boom box and play a cassette he made. It included this song, another Rush song called Working Man, a couple ZZ Top songs, I think La Grange and I’m Bad (Nationwide), as well as other songs I can’t remember. We listened to that tape every day on the way out and back in, 6 days a week for about 6 weeks. Only good thing about that job. Well, and messing around with the girls in the corn fields.
I’ve always loved Rush, but I’ve never been able to get into this song. Geddy’s vocals are kind of grating. It’s always surprised me that *this* was their biggest hit.
Not one of those cookie cutter bands that knows just 3 power chords, Rush was about the absolute mastery of every instrument they touched. Saw them in Montreal twice, and Boston once. Epic each time.
Used to live by Alex lifeson. we both shopped at the same electronic store. In 1991? I bought the 1st 55″ wide screen Pioneer tv in Canada Alex lifeson bought the 2nd one. He ordered it 1st then canceled so my order came in 1st then he reordered it and he got 2nd. That’s my rush story.
I graduated high school in the late 80s and always like this song but was never a really big fan. But, as I have gotten older and listened to them a little more closely I have a great appreciation for them. Holy shit they are/were amazing musicians. Neal Peart was beyond incredible.
this made me realize i’ve never actually seen anyone in this band. what a strange realization. as soon as the video started i was like “woah, i wonder what Geddy Lee looks like!”
There’s something about the tone of Geddy Lee’s voice that I find deeply unsettling. High, clear, a bit nasally, and with absolutely no vibrato. It’s just so odd.
Compare with Ozzy, another vibrato-less tenor, that somehow comes across as mostly pleasant to listen to.
Moving Pictures was one of my first albums I bought. What a great album. What a great power-trio. This showcases all of the musicianship in this band. I think this era was their high water mark. +1
I saved up in HS to take my BF at the time to see them in concert in early 2000s. It was the best decision of my life. Not because I have a connection with that dude, but because I realized how fucking great Rush was and how much I loved concerts by my fucking self lol
In December I learned that the Rush boys grew up with the daughter of my mother’s best friend and they often hung out in their basement in their Toronto house. I’ve known the family for about 40 years and just learned this. When I told my husband, he nearly cried. He’s a drummer and Rush and Genesis are his favorite bands.
Slappa da bahse!
One of the best songs to start your day with. Really eases the blow of that 9-5.
The drummer is using a click track to keep tempo. Kidding! Kidding! Just a joke, Rush Heads.
Hell ya
Neil Peart is one of my favorite drummers of all time
*edit – also my most air drummed

just skip to 2:30
So many Geddy Lees.
I remember seeing this waaaay back in the day on MTV. The bar for what counted as a music video was a lot lower back then.

Mesmerising!
Watched their documentary with my dad shortly before he passed away… now whenever I hear this song I think of him and it makes me smile
Edit: thank you for the reward… that too made me smile 😊

Neil Peart is a Rock God.

I’ve got a Rush pinball machine that is so fun to play while it blasts their songs.
Man, this is always a “turn it up to 11” song
Haven’t heard this for a couple of years, thanks OP for reminding me of just how good these guys are.
Slappin da base
Thank you, Geddy Lee, for your magical voice.
GD this is music!
I still have no idea what this song is about. Is it related to the story by Mark Twain?

I believe this was recorded at Le Studio in Morin Heights, Quebec

turns out he looks EXACTLY how i expected
So much talent
Rush was the first band that ,as a teenager, I ever thought about the phrasing. Neil’s lyrics blew me away in high school.
Slapa-da-bass
Sad that Le Studio is gone.

Neil Peart. The master.
Used to blast this out of my huge boom box walking down the street in my hometown with a swag in my step
Gods of the North
Such a great song. Thanks for posting.

Love this so much. Neil Peart is sorely missed.

Rush will never *not* be cool. And that’s coming from a 19 year old a few decades too late.
“Alright. It’s Saturday night, I have no date, a 2 liter bottle of Shasta, and my all Rush mixtape. Lets rock.”
I just learned that Neil Peart was 6′ 4”. No real significance, just thought I’d share.

A Monday Warrior a Mean Mean Stride
I’ve Got Two Congas, They’re Placed Real Wide
Epic band that was disrespected for a long time. Their Rock & Roll HOF induction speech is a must watch.
OK Jordan Schlansky.
Man these guys rock live.
However Tom Sawyer is banned from all of our vehicles.
My wife has been in 3 car accidents, one broke her leg, and this song was playing each time.
It comes on the radio and she’s like greased lighting going for that power button.
