Apart from Joe Satriani, Steve Vai, Hank Marvin, Jon Petrucci, Jimmy Page, Mark Knopfler…. I’ll stop as i’ll start to sound disingenuous.
Jeff beck was 78, it’s a good age and while his death is sudden and sad but to say ” Nobody else even came close” is just hyperbole, he was great, a superbly clean guitarist but there are a decent amount of guitarists as good or better, some inspired by him.
The above song is the first Jeff Beck tune I ever heard and it’s great, really bloody good but i’m not going to pretend Surfing With The Alien is less good just because he’s just died. Other guitarists did come close or exceeded his talent, Jeff Beck will be missed.
I appreciate it’s not going to be popular but…like shania said, “it doesn’t impress me a lot. ”
To me this is the same as Mariah Carey warbling up and down her range, I’m impressed you can do this thing with your instrument but it brings me no musical pleasure. I see it as more akin to one of Ghyslain Raza’s wildly popular technical demonstrations.
What I loved about Jeff Beck, besides his playing, was that he would just vanish. Go back to his farm and work on cars. Then appear and guest on some song or release an album of AMAZING guitar work. He was like an awesome groundhog or something.
While this isn’t easy to do, it’s not exactly a good song. Maybe if I was REALLY stoned. Does someone have a better example of his music? Maybe with a full band?
Um. So yeah, turns out I didn’t know that Jeff Beck wasn’t Beck (of ‘Loser’ fame). Holy shit… all those top guitarist lists make so much more sense now. I always wondered what was so good about ‘him’.
THE greatest electric guitarist to ever walk this earth.
He was sooooo goood!

His hair is so pretty. I’d like to bite his neck. I’ve heard a rumor he’s more fluid than Jeff Beck
He inspired me to play guitar!!! 😭😭
RIP, this is a huge loss.

Yeah this looked like somebody trying to figure out what that little lever thingy even does. I’m glad other people enjoy it I guess.
Lol he’s not even top 10

This guy was my idol. I’m at a loss for words right now. The last time I’ve felt this was when SRV died. I’m done….
Oh no who is going to stroke Johnny Depp’s ego now?

This was a great concert and the full thing is available on Youtube. Take some time today and watch it all.
BTW this isn’t even close to the best performance of that concert. I don’t know why the OP chose this song.
Here are a couple of great ones

Mid-’60s Beck sounds different than late ’60s Beck, sounds different than ’70s Beck, sounds different than… etc.
Rock guitar pioneer, set the bar and kept moving it to the next thing, always interesting; always unique.
I was lucky to see him tour with Tal Wilkenfeldt and Vinnie Colaiuta. Amazing
