Before this gets into the usual muddled miscommunications, Aaron did not create reddit. He was brought in, at the behest of reddit’s main funding source, to do some work on the codebase when the site was still well on its way to becoming big. They put his name as “co-founder” as sort of a joke, since there were only three or four people working on it at the time. He left less than a year later after a heated disagreement over selling to Conde Nast and later even his code was scrapped when reddit moved to a different web framework.
This post should be ranking in 1st for today. Unbelievable that this guy fought for freedom, was eliminated by the government and nobody seems to care. He also knew too much about reddit’s agenda, hence why every time his name is brought up the threads get removed or nerfed.
It’s insane the level to which this guy is praised as some Snowden-esque figure on Reddit.
The guy just didn’t care about getting caught. Got caught. Was mad about it. Then decided the consequences he didn’t care about were just too much and killed himself.
This was a pretty smart guy who thought he was a lot smarter than he was.
It’s very important that we never forget Aaron’s original vison of Reddit.
“we need to take information, wherever it is stored, make our copies and share them with the world. We need to take stuff that’s out of copyright and add it to the archive. We need to buy secret databases and put them on the Web. We need to download scientific journals and upload them to file-sharing networks. We need to fight for Guerilla Open Access.” ~Aaron Swartz

Keep upvoting this. Don’t let reddit ever brush this under the rug.
Nooooooo
He would be disgusted with what reddit turned into
Everyone should have to watch the documentary about him. An important, sad, and inspiring story.
Such a great documentary. Sad story.
I’m not watching an almost 2 hour long video.
Anybody got a summary of who this dude is?

I’m really surprised mention of Aaron isn’t a sidewide bannable offense on modern reddit.
