If I search for houses in louisiana with basement, I get numerous available houses to buy. I don’t think this a rule that fit every place in louisiana.
In this case, it does in a way make sense because of the salt mine located under the property. All over Louisiana there are massive salt mines caused by water erosion. A friend of mine started playing the game and called it out for the basement thing, and he then followed it up with “unless there’s like a salt mine under the house or something” and basically predicted the end portion of the game. So Capcom really did their homework on this one.
I absolutely noticed this. Also, in the beginning of Uncharted 4 we can move around Nate’s house in New Orleans and see glass bottles in his recycling bin. New Orleans doesn’t recycle glass. Immersion ruined.
There are houses in Louisiana with basements (I’ve lived here for 20+ years, went to school in Baton Rouge, etc). But it is fair to say that the basements are generally bad to build here. In a lot of places, it’s almost impossible – the water table is less than a foot below the surface, and you’d just have an indoor pool full of snakes.
But there *are* places with basements. Most were built as fallout shelters during the Cold War. Many of the basements on LSU’s campus were originally built with this in mind. However, they have lots and LOTS of drainage issues. There’s a basement below the main library on LSU’s campus in Baton Rouge that routinely flooded when I was there. Like, multiple times a month.
As someone who has lived in Louisiana I have never been in a house with a basement. They might exist but they are not common. I have seen government buildings with “half basements” where one end of the floor qualifies as a basement but the other side doesn’t. Essentially building built into the side of a hill
I used to live in Louisiana. RE7 was extra terrifying for me because the baker family reminded me of people I’ve actually met in Louisiana. Like the mannerisms, accent, etc. were all pretty accurate aside from the horror bits.
Was confused by a house with a basement. While they exist in Louisiana, it’s fairly uncommon.
Oh there are basements, but the owners are glutton’s for punishment and like to brag about how much money they waste on keeping them sealed during floods.
It would cheaper to buy a navy surplus submarine, bury it, then build a house on top.
Except it’s the same guy who built that place as the crazy facilities around the mansions and police department. Dude’s probably the most daring civil engineer in the world.
I live in north Louisiana, on a river. My landlord who lives in the house next door to me has a basement. It does flood from time to time, but not as much as you would think.
The most innacurate thing I can imagine in that game is the derranged maniacs inhabiting the house sitting down and writing tax returns and paying electricrity bills to keep the lights on in that whole massive estate.
You don’t understand… it’s not a basement.. “they told me I was mad to build a secret base in the swamp. I did it anyway….it sank into the swamp… so I built a second secret base on top of it….it sank into the swamp… but the third secret base….stayed up!!”
It’s funny what can set a southerner off. This is why I could not watch the first season of The Walking Dead. It took place in Atlanta and there was only one black guy in the entire show. I mean I can take the idea that the dead roam freely from the graves harvesting the living, but no black people in Atlanta? Now that is hard to accept.
do they have zombies though?
It’s a zombie basement, they built one, it collapsed and then came back from the dead.
Considering how the game nailed realism in every other aspect, this is shocking.

Literally unplayable!
You can have a basement down south, it’s just not common
I guess that’s why it’s so moldy down there

OP is inaccurate. There are basements in Louisiana…
Honestly that basement where you’re introduced to the molded was the most terrifying part imo
Even hoses in Venice have them, and there the soil is literally just water
You can build a basement below the water table, you just need a sump pump to remove water. Plenty of houses have basements in these areas.
Post logic is nonsense. We build below the water level all the time, obviously.
i’ve grown up and always lived in a house with a nicely spacious basement.
then i moved to ireland 10 years ago… WHERE AM I SUPPOSED TO STORE STUFF? 10 years later i still have no answer.
Have you seen the basement? It’s filled with mold.
So it’s accurate, I’d say.
If you really wanted a basement in the lousiana swamp, I’m sure you could find a way.
Have you been to the basement in that house? It’s probably the most water damaged basement I’ve ever seen.
Are basements really that common in the states? I’ve never seen a house with one where I live
I absolutely noticed this. Also, in the beginning of Uncharted 4 we can move around Nate’s house in New Orleans and see glass bottles in his recycling bin. New Orleans doesn’t recycle glass. Immersion ruined.
I mean they do have some pretty bad mold in the basement

Not if you have a salt mine, look it up.
ITT;
People who live along the coast saying “this isn’t realistic, most houses here can’t have basements”
vs
people who don’t live along the coast googling a fistful of houses built with basements saying “nuh-uh!”.

I don’t know about you guys, but I chopped my own hands off, stapled them back on, then hand dug my own basement in a Louisiana swamp.

Wait till you get to the Alamo level.
