I forget what it what up against
Oh weird, I rewatched that last night. That movie is a masterpiece
I’m more bummed that Logan did not get a nomination for best picture that year when it was actual quality but Black Panther did for *obvious reasons*.
I believe Get Out or the Shape of Water won that year.
Dunkirk screenplay was nothing special. I disagree given the quality of the film’s that it was up against .
The problem with Dunkirk’s story is- by end of the film, you still know absolutely nothing more than when it began. It could have been a battle anywhere. At any time. There’s nothing significant within the story telling that makes Dunkirk’s original story compelling.
Dunkirk = over rated
Nah, don’t agree. Im my honest opinion Nolas has already peeked as director and his most recent movies are good but nothing spectacular imo. The Prestige, Memento and Batman Triology are his masterpieces.
dunkirk requires multiple watchings to fully appreciate, I’d imagine most academy jurors don’t give their films that much space
Pretty hard when there was barely any dialogue in the movie, no? Amazing war scenes though.
Show this man some nonlinear storytelling and he’ll endorse anything for an Oscar. Dunkirk wasn’t that well written
I mean it was very well written, but the actual nominees were very strong that year
For anyone curious this is from The Ringer podcast “The Rewatchables.” Quentin was on 3 different episodes and talked about the movies Dunkirk, The King of New York, and Unstoppable.
Dunkirk did nothing for me.
Not a criticism of the film at all, I think it’s a masterpiece. But the screenplay is so minimalist though, why on earth should it get nominated for screenplay. I definitely think Dunkirk and Three Billboards deserved Best Pic over Shape of Water though.
Have any of the negative commenters actually read the screenplay?

Nolan is at his best when he just tells a story instead of characters explaining the complex ideas to each other.
Memento & Dunkirk are his best because of this
Dunkirk was fine in a lot of ways, but it definitely didn’t have the best screenplay
