Besides Portal (1&2) and maybe The Witness, I really think most puzzle games are underappreciated.

I am generally not clever enough to enjoy puzzle games, but I’ll take your word for it.
My dad is an old Mexican that thinks videogames are for children. But he got so hooked on Machinarium after one of my nephews dared him to get through the puzzles. It was pretty funny to watch him curse at the TV. He still beat the game and has been playing a lot more puzzle games since.
I generally don’t like it when puzzles are explicit, though. I prefer adventure games in which puzzles are part of the narrative, and understanding the story and the characters’ motivations is important to solve the puzzles. From your list, Machinarium is probably the one I enjoyed the most.
Puzzle games rly don’t get the love they deserve. I mean, besides Portal and The Witness (which are lit btw), most ppl sleep on them. But trust me, u gotta try some of these puzzles out there, they’ll blow ur mind ❤️
Have anyone played: Manifold Garden, Superliminal and Viewfinder? I have these on my wishlist, just not sure about them.
Also, what are your thoughts about Stanley Parable? This game has overwhelmingly positive review on Steam, but I checked gameplay video and there you just go around listening to a narrator. Doesn’t look fun.
If you love Return of the Obra Dinn, you’ll love Case of the Golden Idol. Excellent puzzle game which has a great art style
Return of the Obra Dinn got me tripping with no drugs.
No Stephens Sausage Roll?
Playing The Talos Principle right now. Really liking it too.
Currently playing through the Rusty Lake collection, highly recommend.
I wouldn’t say it’s underrated when you’re as dim as I am. I ain’t finished Myst to this day and been playing it since 1996. No I don’t want any guides or walk through, I wanna use that dim light bulb that is my noggin to get ‘er done.
The only bad thing about the genre is that you cannot play it a second time (unless it is randomly generated which usually isn’t great for puzzle games).
Anytime I see a post talking about what game we wish we could forget so we could play it again, I always think of return of the obra dinn, easily in my top 5 games of all time. It is a fantastic game which will make you feel genuinely clever, but only on a first playthrough. On repeat playthroughs, all you are doing is filling in a check list.
Viewfinder!!
Just finished Limbo. So good.
Where Outer Wilds?
Please try Quern: Undying Thoughts. That game is the real spiritual successor to Myst, not Obduction (which was ok but not great).
Also Outer Wilds, especially its DLC gave me some real Myst-like puzzle vibes.
Also try Infinifactory which is like Minecraft but all about puzzles.
Not to mention
Professor Layton
Phoenix Wright
Ghost Trick
Scribblenauts
Catherine
Pushmo/Crashmo/Pushmo World
World of Goo
Also the falling block puzzle games. Tetris, Puyo, and Puzzle Fighter. Also Tetris Attack/Puzzle League
I still need to play Manifold Garden. It looks so good.
Even though I’ve only played the demo, I liked Filament on steam. Gonna pick it up one of these days.
Thanks for bringing my attention to Manifold Garden!
The reason it’s the most under-appreciated category is because the majority of people on this planet can’t use their brains
Do genres get rated as a whole? I sure do love when the word underrated is used meaninglessly!
I’m probably one of the few but I just couldn’t get into Talos, didn’t grab me. Portal 2 is one of the best ever though.
If you enjoyed The Witness, you should try The Looker
Underrated.. in your opinion.
I’m just glad Spiderman had the option to skip those bullshit puzzles otherwise I’d have stopped playing out of frustration.
Just don’t tell me you figured out myst on your own
Y’all need to stop using the word “underrated” for things that are simply “overlooked”. The people who are into puzzle games like them already.
I highly recommend checking out Zachtronics games. They’ve made several great programming and automation puzzle games such as TIS-100, Infinifactory, Opus Magnum and Exapunks.
Though less/not story driven, I would like to toss The Pedestrian and Patrick’s Parabox into the ring. The Pedestrian is a good one-sitting bundle of fun, and Patrick’s Parabox just twists your brain into a pretzel trying to work out its mechanics.
Oh and if anyone is ready to completely melt their brain: Antichamber
Tunic includes fighting, but is a damn good puzzle aswell
Some of my favorite games.
Machinarium is soooo good and beautiful
The Swapper is so good.
You missed antichamber. Player all of the games you mentioned. The witness is my favorite of them, but antichamber takes the cake for me.
LOVED Braid and The Witness. I have Talos but haven’t started it yet
I am not into puzzle games, generally, but some of these I’ve played and they are bangers. Obviously Portal is great.
The Looker
Adding some more to an already great list you got there: Anti Chamber and Quern
Outer Wilds
Case of the Golden Idol
Certainly a lot of underappreciated gems, one of my favorite puzzle games is The Bridge, it let’s you shift your perspective and gravity to solve your problems.
Today i’m still waiting for the next The Room game. The story is simply amazing and the puzzles are always good
