The song was written by Michael Jackson and Lionel Ritchie, they wrote a verse for Prince to sing, but he refused to do it. Prince hated the song. This was at the height of the Michael Jackson vs. Prince rivalry. Michael was willing to put the rivalry aside for the cause, but Prince wasn’t willing to do that. Instead, he recorded and offered a solo recording “4 The Tears in Your Eyes” for the charitable album. That’s why he wasn’t singing and didn’t take the mike, Prince hated the song and didn’t want to have anything to do with it
Prince had a long history of not wanting to be involved in performing “We Are the World” and Quincy Jones got him to get on stage for the ten year anniversary even though Prince said he wasn’t going to sing it.
Prince was cool and whatnot, but if you know you’re not going to participate why even get on stage? Seems pretty childish to me. Like, sure, the song is hot garbage, but they’re doing it “for a good cause” and his acting that way makes the whole thing looks unprofessional.
I loved Prince’s music, still do, his movies even and then he did the “artist formerly known as Prince” BS which for some reason made me realize his ego was far bigger than his pipsqueak body and I lost respect, conceit is not pretty.
