I work with kids and take them to playgrounds frequently throughout my work day. My experience with modern slides is that they are rougher, cause more minor injuries, and are less fun. The kind of injuries that get reported are less likely, but a big portion of that might be because kids don’t ride down them as much.
Old slides are more fun, cost fewer minor injuries, and major injuries such as broken bones never used to be considered that big of a deal historically. On the playground people get hurt.
There have been some improvements to playgrounds. I like the bouncy ground. I was not a huge fan of getting massive slivers from wooden playgrounds, but those were probably worth it. I like the giant net pyramids and the bouldering walls. And I love the preponderance of splash pads.
We need to get back to people designing playgrounds who remember what it’s like to be a kid, and you probably have kids themselves.
Also, except for in cases of gross neglect, we need to take the liability away from the property owners when it comes to recreational activities. If you go skiing at the resort and crash it’s on you. If your kid falls off this slide and gets hurt it’s on your kid. It has gotten to the point in some places where people trespassing on your land can sue you if they get hurt. If I drive my car across your lawn and smash into the tree in your front yard I shouldn’t be able to sue you for the placement of that tree. If I roll my four wheeler on your back 40 and break my leg I shouldn’t be able to sue you. If I fall through your skylight while trying to break through your house and get bit by your dog the judge should laugh me out of the room. The liability for our actions needs to fall on us unless they were booby traps or gross misconduct. A failing ski lift should be a liability. Woodchuck holes in a grassy field should not.
This is scientifically a really good way to show the effects of waves and vibrations, and how just a slight error in balancing can lead to great damages in motors for example.
Life comes at you fast, sometimes from both sides.
