Damn, that shit is wild. Low visibility and slippery conditions are no joke on the road. Speed here is your worse enemy. Hope everyone involved is okay.
I’ll never understand why people blindly barrel forward when their visibility is shorter than their stopping distance. And not just one idiot, or two idiots, but an entire *pack* of idiots.
The number one thing they teach you if you live in a place where it snows is to drive to the conditions. Living in Canada, dealing with major snow storms and icy roads is a thing you have to know how to do, it’s not uncommon to see everyone driving 40 kph on a 90+kph highway if the weather conditions are bad.
When I went on a road trip to Washington in the winter and living in LA when it rained, people have zero idea how to drive to conditions. I’d see people with completely bald tires speeding 120+ kph during the first rain of the year when the roads are slick, people driving 100+ with summer tires on a highway thinking ‘one inch of snow isn’t anything to worry about’ or ‘all-season tires are all season, I’ll be fine’.
Learn how to drive to the conditions everyone, and if you’re in doubt, slow down.
Jesus Christ people! If you can’t see shit and get into an accident, expect the people behind you are gonna be in the same boat. Don’t just stand around waiting to be killed…
ETA: and perhaps be more concerned about living things than inanimate objects.
Second edit: I made my ETA comment before I saw the very end. So more props to camera dude for wanting to check on people.
I live in a cold country where it snows 6 months a year basically. The amount of people going at regular left lane speeds (say 70 mph) while the road is covered in snow, visibility is low or inexistant and STILL fucking tailgating other drivers is really frightening. Especially from Large SUVs drivers and pickup drivers.
Guys, understand that your large 4×4 vehicle won’t give a damn of there is zero transaction under the tires. Your reaction time is shit to begin with, and it there is no way in hell you can dodge anything or stop fast enough if ANYTHING happens. This is why we get pillups like this multiple times every year.
SLOW DOWN AND STAY AT LEAST 8 SECONDS BEHIND THE VÉHICULE GOU ARE FOLLOWING.
To be a little fair to these unfortunate folks, they were probably driving along on clear roads with sunny skies, and entered a sudden and unexpected snow squall. They still should have slowed the hell down as soon as they saw the conditions, but it can be very sudden. I live in NJ and and I watched a couple of squalls blow through today. It can go from sunny to whiteout in just a minute or two.
Pennsylvania resident here close by this pileup. The white out today was insane. Came in like a lion and left about 30 minutes later. The sun ended up coming out.
I’ve driven 81 many times over in various conditions and yes, conditions can and do change fast in that region of the mountains. In addition to the “Slow down” comments, yes, people do slow down.
However…
In my experience with snow/fog on this highway, it is dangerous. Even MORE dangerous if people – in white, silver, and gray vehicles especially – do NOT turn on their headlights or when this bad, turn on your hazard lights for visibility, even if you pull off to the side.

how stupid is that guy, just casually exits vehicle – stands there with his back to the traffic, and almost dies.
“I need to get the f off the road”
Proceeds to run off the road and then heads straight back to the road again.
“I need to get my s out of my car, but it’s too dangerous”
Proceeds to run toward his car.
Holy! That a was like around 1pm? EST. I got Snow squall alerts in my office! That one guy so lucky…

I-81 … more accidents and crazy weather than any road I know.
I was literally yelling GET OFF THE FUCKING ROAD to my computer screen at that guy just standing next to his car.
What a dumbass.
Love the camera-man, though. He couldn’t decide it this was awesome or awful, then’s like “welp, gonna go save some lives!”

Dude sounds like he’s having a great time..
Bro, it’s almost April, and you guys are in a fuckin blizzard. How do you Northerners live like this?
Slow the fuck down.

Someone call a Tow truck?
I’m sitting in it right now. Almost been 5 hours now. All the cars have been told to turn around and leave on the shoulder. The trucks are stuck here.
What I wouldn’t give for a Porta-Potty truck to be nearby…
Edit** They got the trucks out around 7pm. Yes I peed lol

3 people are reported to be dead from this pile up
Why the fuck are people cruising at speed in this weather?

Are people getting dumber? I swear everyone in this video acts like a complete idiot.
If there is low visibility why didn’t they just slow the fuck down? They all come in rushing. I don’t understand this stupidity.
The camera dude is like a puppy, whatever he looks at completely dominates his emotions.

Feels safer once the truck wall is up at the end….
Wow, multiple jaw-drop moments, freaky scene, great video.
Might surprise you that minersville has the worst education program in the state.

Hmm yes let me continue to drive at 70 mph when I can’t see 30 feet in front of me

Get out of the cars and as far away from the roadway as you can, you absolute numpties.
the thunderous sound of cars crashing every few seconds is just mind jarring. wow
is the constant banging more cars crashing!?
The way you can still hear collisions happening all throughout the video. Holy shit.
