OP here, just to add, this is in Kings woods (It really is called that) Bedfordshire, England. It’s my local woodland. I take photos there often.

If it’s deep in the woods in a rural area, you may also have a “destination of demise”. Many country folks aren’t taking their old pets to the vet for at $350 final visit. A shovel, a pistol, and an old/infirm/ill pet on a nice one way walk in the woods is not uncommon.
