Watching hockey pre-HD was so miserable … “where’s the fucking puck”. Even worse for me was watching games on CBC (Hockey Night in Canada) from the U.S. because CBC broadcast in 50Hz which looked even worse on a 60Hz TV.
On a side note, the broadcaster here (John Davidson) that recognized the penalty for the goalie crossing center ice was himself a goalie for the NY Rangers before becoming the color analyst and eventually president of the team.
lmao let the goalie skate it up, I swear these rules are from the days when the goalie was basically just a normal skater. I feel the move would be punished appropriately in most cases by just having a skater on the ice who is weighed down by pads and has to one hand it
Funnily enough, back in the day when there was a delayed penalty call the goalie would actually skate into the offensive zone as the additional player. Not sure what came first though, the rule that goalies can’t cross center, or the realization that it was better to have them come to the bench and replaced with a player.
The last few years of Roy’s career anytime we had a 2-3 goal lead with less than a minute left in the game he was hell bent on scoring an empty netter. I can recall like three games he would get insanely far away from the net (pre trapezoid days) and get caught out of position trying to score.
Marc Crawford got his first grey hair that game. You can just tell he’s defeated and can’t say anything to Roy 😂
Breaking news!

Roy was the quintessential french-canadian goalie and just such a character.
The guy also stood on his head most games.
Roy and Hextall were both super entertaining goalies back in the 90s
I’ll just have to take your word for it I guess
Question after watching this video. Can the goalie carry the puck over center ice?
Roy went on to coach the Avs years later lol
Favorite memories of Roy are watching him and Osgood skate out to center ice to fight during a Red Wings game.
The cackling from the announcers was icing on the cake… Pardon the hockey pun.

Mario f**k’in Tremblay. To this day it still hurts.
Roy Donk
I heard his name isn’t pronounced “Roy” it’s “wah” somehow
Definitely a classic
Also a great example of how hard it was to watch hockey on TV in the 90’s. Quality was better than the video but not by much.
How many goalies can say they successfully deeked the Great One?
*deke*: to fake (an opponent) out of position (as in ice hockey)

As a Red Wings fan from back in the day of the Russian Five, this makes me smile
Makes me wonder what causes the rule to be created in the first place. To prevent a odd man rush with a goalie?
