ME is the abbreviation for Maine. Jason asked Emily if she liked him, and Emily responded that she’s never been to Maine, so she wouldn’t know. She read, “Do you like ME (Maine),” and not, “Do you like me?”
In 7th grade I had a teacher threaten this when we started kicking rolled up paper notes to each other. So I wrote “Do you like that my facts don’t stink?” And blatantly kicked it into the center aisle like I had missed my target. She picked it up and started to read it but stopped after like. To this day I’m still disappointed about it.
Funfact: This situation would get the teacher in trouble in Germany since even small letters passed around class like this are protected by the postal secret.

To this cartoonist: not quite. Keep trying.
Also the pun was really bad.
For those who don’t get it:

Non Americans sitting there like: 😐
As a Mainer myself, I chuckled a bit at this
Not missing much. Just beautiful scenery ruined by clueless tourists.
This would do well in r/dadjokes

Emily does like Jason, apparently….and now it is official

This brings back memories…
Can’t tell, is the final panel implying she misunderstood the message until it was read out loud, or is she ashamed for rejecting him like that?
