Still play regularly, grew up on the PS1 port with a kickass soundtrack but terrible frame drops and graphic clipping. Computer runs great but all the music is midi and sounds terrible.
And some of the hardest difficulty spikes it was almost unfair.
I have a special love/hate for this game. It was the first lan party game I played and hosted. I played this game so much ahead of time, I really thought I was good at it.
Bunch of friends came over, computers networked everywhere in the house, pizza and beer and it was a blast. We played all Friday night, then got up and did it again Saturday. I was coming out on top, not every time but a good 70% of the time. But it was some epic battling with my friends. We’d talk some smack and laugh and laugh. Didn’t really matter who won … but, of course, it was cool that I was doing better than most.
Took a break and then when we reassembled for Epic LAN gaming night 2, one of my friends asked if his friend could join us, he had a PC and was ready to go. Sure… why not, more the merrier. And he had beer!
Kid shows up, kinda quiet but had a sweet PC and knew how to setup and connect without help while we ate pizza and joked around. Fired it up and we’re off.
The very first game my friend who invited this kid won. I had kinda a bad start so anxious to kick ass in round 2.
And from that point forward, no one got even half this kids score. Not even close. I’ve never ever seen anyone play so well. It was mind blowing. We even suspected him of cheating (secretly) and had someone “taking a break” watch his screen. He was just better than everyone. But, especially, he was good at finding me and taking me out.
And he’d just yell, Bam! Every time he’d hit someone, Bam!
I know better now but my ego, testosterone and competitiveness at that age wouldn’t let me let it go. I just kept trying and dying. He’d be eating pizza and burping beer and barely watching the screen, while I’m screaming and twisting and turning … and BAM! So frustrating! And after that I never played Descent again. Hats off to that kid – bastard!
We had a Descent league in South Florida back in the day — huge LAN gatherings in rented hotel conference rooms and such every now and then. It was a blast.
I still remember using Kali to convert IPX/SPX packets to TCP/IP so you could play across the early internet. The lag was real, but you just had to guess where the other guy was going and shoot there instead.
Or just shoot a mega missile in his general area. That solved a lot of lag issues, actually…
The best. I played the hell out of this in the mid 90’s as a kid before I every tried a proper FPS. When I finally tried Doom or Heretic after I was used to the 6DOF I thought it was pretty lame I was stuck to the ground, ha. Also drastically remapped the keybindings for this game and have done the same for every FPS to date with much frustration with mostly AAA devs not accommodating 90’s level of keybinding freedom, WTF?
The recent game Overload on Steam is a proper spiritual successor made by most of the devs who made Descent 1 and 2 and is really good. My dream of VR that started in the 90’s was fulfilled with Overload in VR. It’s something else. Finally there is a modern engine you can use to play the old D1-3 games.
If you guys liked Descent, you should try Hellbender. It had mission based objectives, Decent-like dungeons with puzzles and goodies, and Gillian Anderson (Scully from X-Files) as the ship’s AI voice.
I went to an Airforce demonstration when I was around 10 or so, and waited in line to play this in AR. I was a gamer kid, and had played Descent quite a bit. Everyone ahead of me was struggling bad, couldn’t blow up the first enemy they came up against. You can tell the guy running it is frustrated and bored, but he’s doing his best to be cool.
I get up there and before he’s even done his speech, I’ve figured out the controls and destroyed the first enemy. He’s like “Alright then!” and he switches gears and we’re now talking strategy and movement, he’s talking me through the level. He lets me play an extra 10 minutes more than he should because I’ve drawn a crowd cheering me on since I’ve made it so much further than anyone else.
I beat whatever level and finally, he says “Okay, I’ve got to let other people play now. You’re the best player I’ve ever seen in this! ” I thank him, and the next guy struggles to move and I see him die a little inside. 🤣
Descent. I even had a weird custom controller just for this game.
You should check out [Overload](https://store.steampowered.com/app/448850/Overload/).
Descent! Loved it
I think this was the first game I ever played as internet multi-player. Was around 94 and wild to see other non npc characters on screen.
Check out terminal velocity
The Descent trilogy was epic. Freespace was awesome, too.
Wow unlocked memories I forgot I had with this one
I remember I used to 1v1 a kid down the street from me by dialing right into his modem. We had some epic battles.

It’s because of this game that I have to set my controls to inverted to this day.
Got this game with the software bundle that came with a computer my family got when I was younger. Played it so much
There was multiplayer?!
The soundtrack was epic.
it was decent.
Descent taught me how to pro peak in multiplayer. Such an awesome series. Overload on Steam is a great spiritual successor.
This is one of my favorite most disorienting games.
I played this and Decent: Freespace a lot.

But I do love that game …
Lame story, sorry. Had to get it out. /vent
DESCENT OMG I HAVEN’T THOUGHT ABOUT THIS IN YEARS!
Also known as Finding Whether You Get Motion Sickness In Space (or FWYGMSIS, in which if you made that sound two minutes in, Yes.)

gabbagabbahey. Still resides strong in memory.
Wasn’t this game in a shareware pack?
It was called Odyssey or something. There was a demo of road rash, maybe Captain quazaar, some battle future motorcycle game. Am I imagining this?
Anyone with fewer than 12 fingers was at a serious disadvantage playing this game on a keyboard.

Core 10 year old me memory.
