  • I love his essays. He’s one of the best channels for film nerds still going (burnout has claimed most of the others). Hell, his most recent video about Raimi and the Coens is a really fun, really informative watch.

    I do not understand the insistence on keeping this “Charl” thing going, much less hanging actual cinematic aspirations on it. It’s marred almost every video he’s made for the past year+ (and yes, I know “marring” means you have to hit the skip button on your free video platform, boo-hoo) and beyond that it’s just… not good? It’s not funny, or clever, or even decent-quality filmmaking.

    I just don’t see how this isn’t the exact same fumble that his predecessors in this field (AVGN, Channel Awesome, Red Letter Media) succumbed to. It’s by default better made, I guess. (although IIRC the nerd got Bear McCreary to do the score) But it’s still the same general fuckup at its core.
