This was almost entirely made from pastel. Unison and PanPastels provided the very blendable base, then mostly Carbothello pencils for the details, and Pitt pastels when I couldn’t quite get the right colour otherwise, or if I wanted slightly sharper details (Pitts have a harder core than Carbos).
Then a little Polychromos colour pencil as a final top layer of even smaller detail for the eyes, and white gouache for the whiskers/tiny highlights. I started using the gouache on the chin, but it was taking me down a road of many highlights that would have never ended, and the values would have been top different, so I covered those bits back up in darker pastel.
I use a grid method for all the details, and just take as much time as I need. I’ve found it far more valuable time spent recently to edit an image exactly how I want it to look before starting. In this case, I made the eyes a lot more blue than in the photo, and the edges blurry. The whole thing has little hints of turquoise, purple, blue, green, pink and other colours in various places.
60cm*75cm, took around 80 hours I think, photo reference credit: Tazi Brown.
I’ve been working as a dry media artist for 15 years, the first 12 of which were using graphite for human portraiture. These days I work pretty much exclusively on wildlife and pets, and donate 10% of all print sale profits to selected wildlife charities.
I’ve put all this info here to potentially save myself a little time answering the usual questions (I don’t like to ignore people but it has been a little time consuming in the past! XD). I have another piece to get on with before the end of March, but if there’s anything else you’d like to know you’re welcome to ask and I’ll try my best to get back to you. Have a great weekend! π
Keep smiling.
Beautiful

I love the out of focus areas on this one, really makes the face stand out. In David Shepherd this year?
At this point would you even call it art….its litterly like printing a photo.I bet it looks identical to your reference….I’m just baffled, great work op.
This is the most impressive thing I have seen on Reddit today. I would have never guessed this was pastel.

I’m out of my element here, and hope you don’t mind me asking a noob question, was this made with those oil pastels on normal paper?
