This is incredibly common in the EU though.
I’m either blindly ignorant or need to get out in the world more, but is this an actual thing? Over here in tea and scone land, filling and then paying is the norm. Stations have ANPR cameras so even if you left without paying you’re fucked.
Cool, we can steal gas again.
Last time I saw a gas station that did this I accidentally left after pumping and had to go back haha. I was all ready too used to paying at the pump
in rural America this is common…not so much in the cities.
All the gas stations around here went pre-pay at pump this year. There’s one left that is pay after, but that ends at 8:00 PM.
Pretty much every single petrol station in the UK operates this way
The sentiment that they trust me is nice and all, but making me go into the station and probably stand in line isn’t making the experience better. I’d rather they think I’m Butch Cassidy if it means I can instantly pay, fill up then go about my business.
Laughs in Canadian
Standard in the UK. Pay at pump is the new thing.
Pump, pump, pump, then come inside. It’s only natural.
Completely normal in Germany
I guess. But why? We’re trained, the system works, why fix what’s not broke? UNLESS maintenance and fees associated with the card reader system exceed the cost of anticipated theft……
If I can’t pay at the pump, I find another gas station!
Phrasing?
I worked at a gas station in Texas while we transitioned to pay first. I remember getting yelled at all the time by people who wanted to fill up first then pay.
Yeah, like, three decades ago
I haven’t seen pump first in central california since the early 90s.
Still the norm in the UK, u til after 10pm, depending on where you are, then either you pay at the window, or pay at the pump using your card
I have never paid before pumping 😀 I guess they trust us here in Slovakia 😀
I am from Germany and we also have to go inside to pay after but I prefer paying directly at the pump so I can just go and don’t have to go inside.
From the the UP in Michigan, still quite a few pump firsts.
Own a gas station down state, had to switch, so many drive off during pandemic, and eith the Secretary of State issues, most cars who stole didn’t have plates. Was easy to get away with then. Lost quite a bit.
Pump first. Come inside.
In BC (Canada), the rules were changed to pre-pay in something called Grant’s Law. Named after a gas station attendant who ran after a person filling and dashing and ended up getting dragged to his death to stop some stealing $12 worth of gas. To protect the workers (especially late-night workers) from making such a choice they created a law which makes people pay before filling. That law was passed back in 2008.
But why? I have to be at the pump anyway i might as well pay there too
“We trust you – pump first, cum inside” Sounds like terrible safe sex advice.
*laughs in Oregon and not pumping my own gas in years*
Funnily enough, my wife said the same thing….
Anyways, now I’m a father
Always been pay after in the uk
huh this is wild. I’ve been driving for 20 years and have never seen it like this here in the states.
This was Las Vegas, Nevada, but never seen a pump like this before. This is pretty cool
Pay after is the norm in the Netherlands (except for unmanned pumps)
What gas station doesn’t take Amex in 2022?
Omg😂😂😂 I read it so different 😂😂 im high and my mind is totally…😂😂😂
In the US (not sure about anywhere else), gas stations make very little on selling gas. The real money is in the snacks and drinks “inside”. My cynical side says this is just a way to get you inside to buy shit you don’t need.
I worked many years in support for a company that made point of sale systems (POS) that interfaced with pumps. The POS could authorize the pump in 4 ways:
-Cashier opens pump from POS (for customer to pump any amount, and then come in and pay after)
-Cashier can open pump only for prepaid amount (this was most common)
-Pump can be authorized via credit card reader on pump (this still goes through our POS but without interaction from anyone inside, all automated)
-Pumps are just always left open/in authed state (like the one pictured above)
50% of the calls to our support team was for research in to an unpaid transaction. Sometimes it was simple as a network issue or power issue so card was not charged. But many times they would call wanting card information and the cashier had opened the pump with the expectation customer was going to come in. But instead they drove off with free fuel.
Yeah they already have your license plate on camera and a deal with the police station down the road lol
Most stations that do it, don’t put a sign out about it. I think this is a similar thing to a speed trap, but for a bigger crime. (Better numbers for the city police)
I’m in Australia so I’ve always filled up before paying.
I’m confused how you would know how much to pay?
I never know how much its going to cost to fill my tank, I just keep going until it clicks.
I am too Canadian to understand this post.
Standard practice across Australia.
So this is how it works in New Jersey (they have gas attendants) :
“Cash or credit”
“Fill it— cash”
They pump the gas.
They tell you how much it costs.
You pay them that much.
They pump then you pay.
Is there a reason people don’t just pay at the pump? I genuinely don’t understand
…… welcome to the rest of the world? 😂
Didn’t you guys walk on the moon or some shit? How are you guys so far behind?
In Australia here.
I once accidentally filled and drove off (got distracted, went to the snack counter, still embarrassed).
Got a phone call from the cops the next day. “We believe that you may have …”
Cue horrified realisation. Told them I was at work, but I’d go over and pay it off as soon as I finished. They said that was good enough.
So I went and paid what I owed. They called the station while I was there to let them know I’d done it.
So yeah, they will find you, but they won’t kick in your door. A polite phone call apparently works in most cases.
I’m from New Jersey. Please tell me more about this concept of having to get out of the car when getting gas
Aussie here.
You pull up, get out and fill up, then go inside and pay.
I wish I could just pay at the pump.
I don’t trust shit. Been an Employee at a Convenience store for way too long and seen way to many fucking drive offs. The day we were told that Customers couldn’t pump and pay anymore was a godsend.
