As an additional post for today, I have something pretty special to show you guys from my flea market finds. The finds I’ve posted so far have mostly been on a monetary value basis in terms of craziness. However, with this find, it’s the emotional value that makes this one of the best finds of the day.

I was able to pull this copy of Lou Reed’s Take No Prisoners live album from the same bin as I found the Beatles records for only $2. when I got home, I tried to pull out the albums, and I noticed that one of the records was missing from the cover (This is a double live album, to give context). I felt a bit disappointed in that, but when I was checking inside the cover, a piece of paper fell out of the one sleeve. When I looked at it, I saw that it was a cutout from Melody Maker showing an album review of this record in particular from around the time it came out. I thought that was great, since I always love when I find extra stuff that people hid in records. I found a Beatles record last year where (clearly a young girl) wrote the lyrics of I Saw Her Standing There and Baby It’s You and replaced the female pronouns and names to male versions (Like I saw Him Standing There and Bobby Its You). However, the next thing I found inside of the record is what takes the cake for the whole find.

When I looked inside of the other sleeve, I saw that there was one record in the set still with the original inner sleeve, so that was good. However, I saw that there was something else inside of the cover. When I pulled it out, I could see that there was something written on it. It was a letter written by someone named Robert Kline to someone named Scott from Gainsville Florida. it looks like he took a grocery bag and ripped a piece of it off to write on since he didn’t have any stationary to use. When I started reading the note, I couldn’t believe what I was reading and found it hilarious at points to read. In parentheses, I will put what I think he is talking about if shortened in the text. The letter reads as follows:

    Robt. Kline

    Anchor Lodge

    Gainsville Fla.

    T 8:57 PM. 2/27/90

P Seedy Rooming House $45 wk. Roaches Free!

U of F Student Ghetto (Probably University of Florida)

    Gainsville Fla.

    Krishna:

    Dear Scott, Greetings, etc.

Where does it go? How are ya? Bitchin, I hope. Am sitting here in my seedy, squalid room, having a few (probably beers), and with nothing to write on here I go. Am working at the U of F (Big Job). The rooming house is two blocks from campus. Wildtown! The Harry Krishnas’ live right across the street. I’ve come to feel that although they profess to be the contrary, college students and “neo-hippies” are the most narrow minded people on earth. The countryside is beautiful around here. The river is gin clear. A few of us “filters” are going down the river in canoes next weekend and in general, I like it here.

Have been here since 2/19, so..

    T 9:35 PM 3/4/90

    P Above

Its Tuesday and I still like it here. Self-congratulations! I am the 196,771,342nd person to burn one and listen to “Soft Parade” (smoking weed to the Doors). Yes I’m still nuts. This is wild. I wannabe a Gator! Gainsville is a “fun” place, but the people be very po’ (poor). The local records stores are pretty good, I bought “Take No Prisoners” for $6. There are mo’ women here than you could wave your dick at! I was wondering where all the ladies were at and… They all be here.

I called Mark the other day, and.. (the letter ends here).

When I read this letter, I was dying laughing at some parts, especially the “mo’ women here than you could wave your dick at!” part and the smoking weed to Soft Parade part. This is easily the best note I have ever found inside of a record and it completely makes up for the missing album inside of the record. I wonder how it got in this record in particular, even though the note mentions him buying this album. Also, the note proves my theory correct that he didn’t have stationary and just used a grocery bag instead. In conclusion, not only did I have great musical finds with stuff like Maiden and Wishbone Ash, but cool hilarious finds with this note from the Lou Reed record.

Check out r/Collectionhauls whenever you can for any new posts. I’ve got quite a lot of good finds to show, so stay tuned. Come talk about anything you want in the new discussion page that’s been stickied at the top of the subreddit.
