Novigrad is amazingly rich. I personally prefer Beauclair – not so big so you can move easily and I dig its Mediterranean inspiration.
Goldenrod all the way
I prefer Elektrozavodsko, but yah this is pretty cool.
the big question for me is always: why dont we have already a tony hawk game with all those great cities like this in it???
Novigrad is the most “lived in city” in any non modern style city by far imo
I think the fact that CDPR is based in Poland gives the Witcher an authentically European and medieval feel compared to something like Skyrim which is more fantastical.
Midgar.
I’m doing a play through right now. Back when it released I bought the dlc (after beating the game) and never played it. Now I restarted the game and am finding so much I missed. Even in 2023 this game is beautiful (even on Xbox one s
Rattai/Sasau from KCD or Saint Denis in rdr2 are on another Level imo but Nivigrad is a good One. Night City looks Pretty but its empty and nothing makes sense there.
It’s no Pallet Town but to each their own.
It is nice, but I prefer Beauclair too. Cleaner, more vibrant and none of those eternal fire nut jobs.
Athkatla, Baldur’s Gate 2
I want to nominate Yakuza games’s Kamurocho.
Honestly gran Soren in dragons dogma is a really great representation of a fantasy castle town it’s one of my favorites
Novigrad is cool from a design standpoint, but I found the quests and characters utterly depressing. I called it Sad Sack City after a while…
For me it has to be Night City from Cyberpunk. I know the release was not good, but the city is HUGE and incredibly well designed.
I take it you’ve never been to Pelican Town
My favourite city is Tel Mora from morrowind. Mushroom cities are just cool.
Fun fact: there are 4 cities/towns/villages named Novigrad (literally “New city”) in Croatia (one in Istria, one near Karlovac, one in Dalmatia and one in Podravina). Each year, one of the four hosts and annual meeting of the Novigrads.
My Favorite game of all time
I think toad town in paper Mario or the capitol city in oblivion will always be my favorites. Novigrad is pretty great though, I remember almost every area in it and I haven’t even played that section of the game in years.
For me it’s Khorinis from Gothic 2. Great city design, feels really nice. NPCs have their routines depending on time of day and weather.
ok but Oxenfurt has a superior theme from the OST.
Pam PARAM pam pam PARAM
Rabanastre in FF12
Many great suggestions in this thread. I also want to add Whiterun from Skyrim into the discussion. I remember it felt like coming home when I returned from adventures.
Are we just talking about fictional cities in video games? If not, then I’ll have to nominate Paris in Assassin’s Creed Unity. Out of all games I ever played, AC Unity was the only game where I was actually amaze at the size and detail of a city.
Edit: Now thinking about it, AC always have great and detailed cities, however they are kind of shallow a lot of times. But Ubisoft always get the feel of it right.
Leyndell in Elden Ring. It may not be your typical game city but it’s incredibly impressive.
Sootopolis >>>>>
My personal favorite is the Imperial City from Oblivion. It may not be the best by today’s standards, but when I first played the game, it blew my mind. I couldn’t believe how big it was, and how many things there were to do. All those side quests, shops, houses, politics, guilds, the arena, NPCs to talk to, and even inter-NPC drama. And as you progress through quest lines, parts of the city culture and citizens change.
Have you been to varrock? Cause that place used to be popping.
Hear me out, Harran from dying light.
It’s not _lived_ in obviously but it’s designed so well that it really feels like a real city.
I remember being wowed then quickly disappointed that 99% of it is inaccessible. Same as Red Dead II’s Saint Denis. Joy quickly turned to frustration.
Have you heard of the hidden indie gem that is the witcher 3?
Beautiful city, but exploring it left me very disappointed. The content (or lack of) didn’t match the size and epicness of the city itself.
