˝In February 1969, Austrains were introduced to the chaotic sounds of Novak’s Kapelle on the television program Countdown. Lead singer Walla Mauritz did his best Jagger shuffle, while a cluster of mods dressed in jumpsuits thrash their bodies to fuzzed out guitar and freak beat drums. The three minute performance ended with a surrealistic depiction of a bad trip; music fading into noise with Mauritz wailing on a harmonica as the camera quickly cut between close-ups of the audience, oozing sludge, and the band pounding on their instruments like madmen.˝
˝German for Novak’s Chapel, the group formed in 1967 under the wind of drummer and namesake Erwin Kovak, vocalist Walla Mauritz, bassist Peter Travnicek, and guitarist Helge Thor. Their debut single “Hypodermic Needle” arrived in 1968 on Austria’s Amadeo label—a stark departure from the legendary imprint’s folkier beginnings. *”We were just trying to shock people,”* Novak confirmed. Following the Summer of Love and Strawberry Alarm Clock’s meteoric chart accession with “Incense and Peppermints”, Novak decided to push the limits: *”I thought, hey, why not write a song about shooting dope?”*˝
˝Novak’s Kapelle issued a non-conformist follow-up in 1969, “Smile Please” b/w “Not Enough Poison”, which maintained an aggressive attitude: *”If you see a policeman, Strike him down as fast you can. Try to catch him, he’s not quick. He’s got no brain but a stick.”* The group took a near-decade hiatus from recording, returning to the studio in 1977 to record the five-song, fake live album Novakskapellelive. With punk breaking Stateside, Ariola Records rolled the dice with the now-apostrophe free Novaks Kapelle and their lone album Naked two years later. The German conglomerate bit off way more than they could chew—the jacket depicted two post-menopausal women completely nude drinking martinis. *”It was a financial failure,”* Novak confirmed. By 1980 their envelope pushing days were done.˝

Fuck yes! Warfaring Strangers is available on Apple Music and is one of my favorite listens. Full of bangers. Drugs by Gift is another on there that I really love.
I’m hearing Grand Funk Railroad(Inside Looking Out).
