I don’t think they were actually married. They just seem like good friends. Why can’t people be friends? Why do they always have to be married? This looks more like someone cosplaying a time period. Their hair is too well kept and their skin is too clean to be from that era. And the photo is coloured? Let’s stop trying to force modern day things onto random pictures, people.

I’ve heard various reasons for people not smiling in old photos from long exposure times to bad teeth to it didn’t seem natural. I believe the latter as you rarely see old paintings with smiles. And when they did it usually meant they were drunk or crazy. So it seems people would think of photography as they did painted portraits.
