I’ve heard various reasons for people not smiling in old photos from long exposure times to bad teeth to it didn’t seem natural. I believe the latter as you rarely see old paintings with smiles. And when they did it usually meant they were drunk or crazy. So it seems people would think of photography as they did painted portraits.
